Kenny Godoy
I’m 34 years old and have been in prison 11 years now. I
have about 20 more to go. I’m not good at introductions since
I don’t write much. Time
has seized my faith and I’ve had my share of disappointments.
But nothing comes without risks and it’s with that understanding
that I find myself writing this. I was born in L.A. (January 12th
is my birthday),
and raised in Culver City, California. I am one of three siblings.
I have an older sister and a younger brother, which puts me in the
middle (the black sheep). My time is spent reading just about anything
I can get my hands on. I also spend some of my time drawing. These
are my two means of escaping these halls of confinement because
this place is anything but caring or understanding! I continue to
educate and better
myself as a person.I will continue to fight to get out one day;
you can’t accept this place. I would like to write to somebody
who will be understanding, is
comfortable with b eing themselves, and isn’t afraid to take
a chance on a man who’s heart has been hardened by his conditions!
Permit me to enter your life and I’ll give you a friendship
filled with loyalty and
respect.

Victor Rankine
Hello. My name is Victor Moboya Rankine, nick names ‘Colin.’
I’m Jamaican by culture but raised in The Bronx, N.Y. I went
to James Monroe High School. I’m from a very supportive and
beautiful family. I’ve been incarcerated for 13 years and
I have 22 months until release. I will be returning back to the
N.Y. area, though I will be living in upstate New York, not in the
city. I love to debate about national and international politics.
I love to read non-fiction and fiction. I love to write letters
because to express one’s feelings and thoughts is very special.
I love to play sports, basketball and soccer. I love music, from
country to reggae. I’m a people person, I love everyone and
I don’t believe in the so-called human race, rather I believe
in humanity and togetherness for all human beings. I am not taking
out this ad to find romance. I want to find a good friend be it
a man, woman, grandma, grandpa, just a friend. For the record, I
will not ask you for any money. I’m well off in that department,
so let it be known I will hold up my end when corresponding with
you. Well, I hope, I’ve convinced someone to converse with
me.

Hello. Thanks for giving these few lines a little of your time
and the chance to interest you, hopefully, in getting better acquainted.
I’m a 33 year old Mexican with brown eyes and hair- I stand
5'11" and weigh
195 lbs and have a muscular build. I am currently serving a life
sentence with the possibility of parole, and as the years come and
go, so do friends and loved ones. The latter usually just go. Friends
are
few in my life and at times I can go for months without a letter
from the outside. I am not saying these things to induce pity. I’m
merely enlightening you on the difficulty on doing time without
friends to lighten your day. I am very interested in making new
friends to share my life with and hopefully bring some happiness
to their lives as well. I am also open to finding a special woman
to be a little more intimate with. Once again thanks for stopping
by. I realize that this is short
and gives you little insight into the man is behind the pen but,
rest assured, with time and a few letters conversation will be more
fluid and interesting. I hope to hear from you soon.

I’m a 35 years-old man from San Francisco and am serving
a 19-to-life sentence for a 2nd degree murder charge. I’ve
been incarcerated for 11 years, but I’ve been in a S.H.U.
program” (isolation) for the last 7
years. I’ve never been married nor do I have any kids. I’m
the oldest of 3, with an artistic talent and acreative mind, as
well as an open mind. So, if someone is willing to correspond I
hope to share some of my talent with you.

Harlan Romines
I’m a 34-year-old tattoo artist from Ventura in sunny, Southern
California. I enjoy writing letters and poems, reading a good novel
and am a sucker for ‘American Idol’. SSHH don’t
tell anyone! Also, I really love drawing, painting and tattooing.
I’ve been incarcerated sever years with about one to go.
I realize to some the short time I have remaining may make some
think twice about writing. The fact of the matter is I love writing
no matter where I am and having a pen pal isn’t just a prison
thing. Having someone to write as I get closer to release and then
while I’m making the transition to life ‘outside’
would be a positive thing. Hopefully for you as weell. So if you
can see past the ‘short time’ thing and would enjoy
corresponding and becoming frriends with a handsome (well, not ugly),
smart (I have my G.E.D.), as well as funny (I do try), young- at-heart
guy, then keep on reading.
Here are a couple things about myself. I have wide-ranging tastes.
In music, for instance, I like a lot of stuff. My parents listened
to country as I grew up so obviously I rebelled and took up heavy
metal! Now I like just about everything as long as it’s good.
I like country, heavy metal, classic rock, blues, some soft rock/pop
and R & B. Why like one thing when there’s so much to
choose from? That’s how I think about most things now. Enjoy
life and sample different things.
Last, but not least, let’s discuss the type of person I’d
like to correspond with. I’m not too picky as long as the
person is a positive influence and a decent human being. It would
be a plus if they really like to write and, like me, are open to
new experiences. Other than that, I’d be happy to make a new
friend.
So hey, pick up a pen and write me. Take care everyone.

Marcos E. Vigil
I am currently housed in the SHU and have been in isolation since
Jan. ‘92. I am a 40- year-old Chicano/Mexicano who enjoys
writing and drawing
as a way of passing my time inside this concrete jungle. Originally
I am out of the Southern California area of Wilmington, and I have
been inside the system since 1980. Consequently, most of my life
has been
spent behind these walls. I’ve held myself together and kept
my self respect about me quite well. I’m hoping to reach out
beyond these walls and perhaps connect with someone out there who
would be willing to
communicate with me on a level of mutual learning and growth. I
am easy to relate to and open to new ideals and avenues of experience.
I maintain my health and sanity quite well in here (despite the
odds) and
I hope that I can be brought together with anyone who’d be
willing to exchange a few interesting moments of time.

Frank Serrano
I am a 32-year-old Mexican interested in a pen pal who enjoys discussions
pertaining to philosophy, history of all cultures and metaphysics
and who also appreciates art and poetry. I am light skinned
with brown hair, green eyes, 5'11" in height, and my weight
is 165 on a good day! I enjoy a good joke so a pen pal with a sense
of humor would be a bonus. After all, someone under these circumstances
could use a
laugh - it’s spiritually healthy. I’m not religious
but I don’t mind a good open minded discussion on the subject.
I don’t know if I’ll be out, but I’m expected
to in 2008 sometime. So far I’ve been in prison going
on 14 years and I haven’t had a pen pal for at least 9 of
those years. Well, I don’t want to reveal too much and I’ll
leave the rest to that curious mind who wishes to be surprised.

Geronimo C. Lozano
My name is Geronimo and I am a 31 year old Mexican from Los Angeles.
To be honest, prior to my incarceration, I was living the wrong
way, keeping the wrong company, making the wrong choices, and doing
the wrong things. During this period of my life I was associating
with gangsters in California, and soon I became one of them. This
was one of the worst
decisions of my life because with each passing day I became more
deeply involved with crime. At the age of 21, my life of crime came
to a halt.
On July 14th,1994, I was arrested and charged with several crimes,
was found guilty of two of them, and sentenced to a lengthy term.
All I had left was a wrecked life. But, while I’ve been incarcerated,
I have been restoring my life the best I can. I have earned my G.E.D.
and I plan to further my education by participating in a community
college correspondence course next year. My goal is to complete
the general
education requirements for an A.A. degree. I dream of one day starting
my own business.
My favorite hobbies are reading, playing chess, and exercising.
Basically, I consider myself to be kind, understanding, intelligent,
full of personality, straightforward, down to earth, adventurous,
strong, gentle, ambitious, funny, and from what I’ve been
told, a one in a million guy. But, if you would like to develop
a friendship through the mail with me in order to find out for yourself,
please do not hesitate to write. I want you to know that I am open
to corresponding with people from all walks of life. I only hope
that you are as well.

I was born in Mexicali in 1965, but came to the U.S. in 1975. Lived

I’m 29 years old and serving a life sentence. I’ve
been here for three years and I’ve been in jail for 5 years.
During that time my grandmother has passed away, the only family
I had. I do have brothers, but we don’t
talk and my mother is sick so I only write to her just to see how
she’s doing.
I try to read. I like books by John Grisham, James Patterson and
Robert Ludlum. I try to keep a positive mind while I’m here.
I’m waiting on my appeal so I pray that that goes well for
me, so I can have another
chance at life. I have no children, but I wish I did. It would give
me something to look forward to. I don’t get mail or visits
so it can get lonely at times. I read my Bible a lot and I go to
church when we’re not on lockdown, so that keeps my spirits
up. I’m not in any gangs or disruptive groups. I stay to myself
a lot. I’m looking for anyone who’s willing to write
to someone like me. I don’t think I’m a bad person,
I’m just someone who made a mistake in life. I’m from
Richmond, CA., and growing up there I had to do whatever I could
to survive, and so that’s how I ended up here. I love music
all kinds but mostly R&B and Hip Hop. I also like to write music
(raps). I’m very very good I must say.
Well I would like to thank whomever takes the time out to read

I’m a 29 year old Mexican from San Jose, California. I’m
looking for a female pen pal for friendship I’m 5' 5"
in height, 146 lbs. in weight, with brown eyes and black hair. I’m
single and looking for someone who
is interested in writing and getting to know me better. I have been
incarcerated for assault with a deadly weapon, so I have a bit of
time to do. I enjoy drawing, writing, and listening to all kinds
of music. I have quite a few tattoos also. I would like to meet
a woman who will not judge me by my past mistakes, but who will
take a chance and the time to get to know me for who I really am.
I believe strongly in family and friends and would like to be able
to share my hopes and dreams with someone. Age and race are not
important to me. If you are over 18 and have a good personality
and interested in starting a friendship with me, all you have to
do is write!

I am an African American, with brown sugar skin, 188 lbs., and
dreadlocks. I am into football, antiques, and comic book collecting.
Lately, I’ve been interested in politics, the language used
in politics, and new laws. I would like to learn more about the
internet. I have been learning Spanish on my own, and would like
to have a woman write who is interested in teaching me. Actually,
whoever writes doesn’t matter because I am eager to learn!
Also, I would like to correspond with a
strong willed, revolutionary type female who doesn’t mind
standing up for what she believes in. Someone who would understand
the straight forward nature of my poetry. Most importantly, I believe
in God, and all
letters would be welcomed.

willing to start a new friendship. I'm not looking for anyone in
particular - I just figure this is a great opportunity to talk to
different people who are open to all topics, especially opinions

sincere who doesn't mind passing time by lifting someone's spirits
with laughter and smiles. Also, someone who loves life and people
as well as keeping it real with themselves and others.
I would like to find someone with similar interests whoI can be

I am 26 years old and on an extended vacation here at the enchanting
Pelican Bay Inn. I’m currently doing time for a robbery and
drug related crime, I’ve earned myself a 12-year sentence.
I’m no angel, but at the
same time, I’ve done a lot of growing up in prison. Everyone
makes mistakes and some people learn the hard way. I’m trying
to take responsibility for my actions. I was born on August 4, 1978
and I’m French Canadian and Native American. I’ve spent
most of my life in Northern California – mostly the Bay area
and Redding – but I have lived all over California. I consider
myself a born-again Christian. I enjoy positive and fruitful conversations.
I spend a lot of my time reading and studying. I participate in
a few self-help correspondence courses. I also love to draw. I’m
one of the few that have a decent education and before I was locked
up, I managed a pet store. My dad is a veterinarian and my mom owns
a dog grooming shop. Bottom line is, I’m looking for new friends
to write to. I hope to hear from someone soon – male or female.
Who knows, maybe if you take a chance on writing to me, or someone
else in prison, you might be surprised that we all have a lot in
common.

I am a 26 year old, Spanish and English speaking Mexican American,
born in San Jose, California. I have been incarcerated since I was
16 years old for robbery resulting in death. 7 and 1/2 of the last
10 years of my incarceration have been spent in solitary confinement.
6 and 1/2 of those years have been here in the SHU. However, through

My request for correspondence is not a cry of a drowning man reaching
for a little assistance. (Even though love and compassion is missing
from places like this). However strange or sensitive that may seem,
it is the truth. This is why I cherish letters. This is why I cherish
time granted from others. This is why I'm seeking a Pen Pal. Something
personal, someone I can trust, someone to share experiences/stories
with. Someone I can open up to with honest feelings and trust with
those secrets. I'm still a human being, and like everyone else,
I still want to feel connected and loved. I can still be warm, loving,
and giving. I still laugh, hurt and dream. I still like to talk,
learn, and grow.
Yeah. I can still be intelligent, literate, friendly and charming.
I have no kids -darn!. I prioritize family. I still enjoy music,
writing, reading, sports, exercising and grasping life's knowledge.
As I'm in the
process of learning the Spanish language. I'm a young 32 (9.2.72)
and a kid at heart. I mean just because you might see signs of snow
on the roof, by all means it doesn't mean there's no fire in the
chimney. Yes, I have a sense of humor. And I always make the best
of every situation. Just to wake up in the morning knowing I've
met another sunrise is a true beauty/gift in itself. And having
the presence of mind to look
forward to another, is all that one can ask for. All I would like
is someone who can understand and appreciate that.
In short, I'm just looking for a little kindness, a friend. Someone
to help ease the pain if you will and fill that void deep within.
To those without, little things mean a lot. Things most people take
for granted are exactly the same things that are cherished by the
ones who don't have the luxury of being able to take for granted.
For a lot of people, a letter is a waste of time. But when it's
your only way to stay connected to the world at large, and people
in general, a letter received is equivalent to a life jacket in
an ocean. As people start to feel the loneliness that comes from
separation and loss of contact causes, they often drown in misery.
But when we have ties to a realm where time is actually devoted
to them, they can float with their heads above water. Even though
the times have gotten more hectic, there are still 24 hours in a
day. It doesn't seem like a person's worth could be measured in
time, but when you tell someone you don'' have time for them, it's
saying a lot. Just as taking time to write a letter says a lot.
Don't get me wrong, I don't pretend to be an angel. However, I've
used what I've gone through, what I've suffered and the suffering
I've caused others as stepping stones to better myself. I've taken
responsibility for who I am and what I've done. It's not sympathy
I'm after, its encouragement. So I reach out for honest, courageous
and kind individuals who have a sense of humor and a sense of wonder
for intelligent encouraging letters to engage in insightful and
thought
provoking conversation. Sharing wisdom and perspectives.
I hope this will provide you with a different view of what your
letters might mean to a person like me. Because for many, kind words
and understanding may be that life jacket that keeps a man from
drowning.
Don't let me go under. Decide if you have time to write someone
a letter and you'll know the value to you of that person, 24 hours
in a day, who's worth the time a letter takes.

At the age of 30 it has become apparent to me that one cannot walk
a fine line for any significant time without having a stumble or
two. I would be easy to blame my incarceration on a dysfunctional
family, but the truth is that I come from a wonderful home. My parents
worked hard to provide for me, they instilled values not only with
words but by example. Maybe the blame should fall on the notorious
city of Los Angeles where I was born and raised? Or, the vicious
gangs that it’s
known for? I wish that it was that easy, but L.A. has been good
to the Flores family. My incarceration is not due to not having
goals. I wanted to play professional baseball or football, and many
thought I had i .
I wanted to attend college, get married, have kids and be able to
provide for them. It’s proof that one should be careful of
what one wishes for! I played semi-pro baseball until I got hurt.
I had to come to prison to take college courses. I got married to
a beautiful woman at the age of 20, and had 3 wonderful kids, who
are my reason for living. It took several break - ups to realize
that she was not for me. So, who can I blame for being placed in
prison with a 15 year sentence (9 of
which I have done)? The answer is me. I am responsible for everything
that happens to me and that is why I am trying to use my incarceration
to better myself. Education is my priority, along with creating
an
opportunities for myself so that when I return to the real world
I can be significant in society and be a representative of the Flores
family that my kids can be proud of. I understand that in my quest
I need
mentors, counsellors, and friends and most of all conviction. If
you are touched by anything I have said I encourage you to drop

going to be honest and
hope that the following will be of interest to you.
I want you to know that I am an open-minded person who welcomes
anyone to write. I am seeking someone who I can share my thoughts
and ideas with. I am looking to make friends to correspond with.
Though a person who has a lot to say, I am also a good listener
and would like to hear what you have to say. This is not just about
me.
I am love to learn new things. I am interested in art, music and
many other educational things and I love to draw and paint. I am
a very open-minded person who has lived and spent time in Southern
California and the Southern United States. I like all sorts of music,
from
classical to country to heavy metal. I love animals too. I like
a lot of things about the European, Asian and Latino cultures. So
if any of this is of interest to you, please do write. I will write
back anyone who takes the time to write me. Don't think twice, just
pick up that pen!
May you have a good day.

Hi! I’m a 23-year-old light-skinned man with light-brown
eyes and black hair, incarcerated fo the past 8 years. I entered
the prison system at 17 and I’ve been in the SHU for a year
now. I’m originally from the Bay Area and I’m an easy-going,
open-minded artist who draws beautifully. I like to write poetry
and listen to a variety of music. I also enjoy the outdoors and
nature. I’m athletic and in great shape standing 5' 11"

I am a 37-year-old man of Mexican descent, 5' 10", 180 lbs.,

I am interested in corresponding with anyone who has an interest
in anything good. I try to stay focused on the positive. Negativity
is such a waste of time. I believe that if we do good, good will
come to us. I try to practice this in all I do. I like to study

the better, right? I am currently focused on Meso-American culture,
specifically the Aztecs. I hope this brief introduction has caught

I am 30 years of age and have been incarcerated since March of
1991 for an attempted murder. I am of Mexican descent, 5'10"
in height, 175lbs. I have green eyes, light skin and short black
hair. I have no facial hair as I can’t grow any. I have no
children and never have been married, but I love kids. I speak and
write Spanish and English fluently. I’ve never done drugs,
smoked or drunk alcohol but I enjoy eating and love candy. Some
of my time I spend writing, drawing or reading. I have both my parents,
one sister and seven brothers who are very caring and supportive
of me. As a kid growing up I was an altar boy at my church but I
was fired for being such a little menace. I believe in religion
and respect everyone’s point of view and beliefs. I might
be describing myself as some kind of angel, but I’m not; this
is just who I am on the inside because I don’t pretend to
be someone I’m not. Just because I’m in prison, it doesn’t
make me a bad, psychotic person. I’m in prison for a bad decision
I made at a young age and I take full responsibility for all my
bad choices. And even though life hasn’t been easy behind
these cold walls, I still manage to be very mellow and easy going.
What I am looking
for in a pen-pal is someone who’s willing to give me a chance
to know them, share their thoughts and friendship. Race, age, big
or small is not a problem; for me friendship comes in every race.
I am open to any type of amistad. Now it’s up to whoever might
be reading this to pick up that pen and paper. I’ll be waiting.

I am a poet and an artist, but according to some, I’m just
a #J05269. I’m 29, born on 2/5/75. I’m doing an 8 year
bid for the sale and transportation of drugs. I’m open minded
and at the same time, a very opinionated, strong-minded man. I’m
interested in being interested. If a person can keep me going then
I know it will be an awesome relationship. Not exactly looking for
love, but support, companionship and respect that will come from
meeting someone new. The latter is the most important to me. Meeting
new people, learning new ways, understanding new perspectives is
what I want to do. In some way, gaining knowledge and wisdom are
things that a new friendship will shed light on. I am in a place
with no feeling, no emotion. I want to share mine with you and hopefully
get the chance for you to share yours with me. My goals are simple.
I want to educate myself and become a better person. In some way
I’ve yet to figure out, I’d like to help others smile.
Somehow, I just want to make a positive difference in someone’s
life. Since you’ve read this far, I’m hoping it’s
you. Besides being interested in being interested, my interests
include art, literature, poetry, plays and great books by great
men who tell a story so well that it’s like a lover’s
warm embrace or a story that will take you there and make you not
want to come back. I love paintings and music, from classical to
today’s music, but my favorite is oldies. I also draw and
write. There is so much more to say, but if I told everything now,
what would we have to talk about when you do write? I’m out-going

Hello and very nice to meet you. I hope when you read this that
it will find you, and all of your loved ones, in the best of health
and always in happy spirits.
I’m Mexican-American and was born on February 5, 1966 in
Los Angeles, Cal. That’s where I spent the happiest 18 years
of my life. I have black hair and brown eyes and sport a mustache.
I do shave it off just to see if I still look young (smile). Do
I? Still look young? Well some say I look younger with my mustache.
Ha. Ha.
I’ve been incarcerated for almost 21 years, but I still keep
hope alive that one day they’ll let me go home. What did I
do? Well, I was convicted of a crime Ididn’t do. It’s
a long and sad story, which I wouldn’t mind sharing with anyone.
I love to play sports and watch them on television. I’ve
been playing sports since I was 6 years young. I also play chess
almost everyday - how else am I going to get better, right”
I wouldn’t mind teaching and
becoming a counselor when they let me go home. I love to read, my
favorite subject has to be history, but I also like philosophy,
science, politics and I just got into child development. My cousin
Monica went to
college and that’s what she took, and so I thought to myself,
I was once a kid myself, and why do we act the way we do? I would
really like to help our kids who are having a very hard time with
everyday life.
Well feel free to ask me whatever you like, I really have nothing
to hide. I’m willing to share my life experiences, the little
wisdom I possess, and most importantly my friendship. Anyway, I’m
really looking
forward in making a new friendship. Just be yourself (smile).

Good day to all. I'm s 39-year-old white man ofaverage height and
weight, with blue eyes. I'll be 40 nextmonth. At the moment, I receive
no mail and have only myself to occupy my time. Letters would be
highly appreciated and all will be answered. I was born and raised
in the Napa Valley, but have lived all over. I'm currently here
for failure to appear and received 6 years with 80%. My past record
isn't too good, which is the reason I received so much time. All
my crimes are property related and I've never hurt anyone physically.
Both my parents passed away. When my dad died just a few years
ago I lost not only a parent but my best friend. He committed suicide.
When that happened I couldn't handle it and resorted to drugs to
ease the pain. On drugs you feel nothing and that's what I wanted
to feel at the time. Before then, I was clean and sober for 5 years
with a good life and clear of trouble and very responsible. I got
very lucky because they wanted to give me a life sentence under
the California 3 strikes law. Someone was looking out for
me, as I'll get another chance at freedom May 2007.
I enjoy watching and playing all sports. My favorite baseball team
is the San Francisco Giants and my football team is the St. Louis
Rams. The Sacramento Kings is my favorite basketball team. I enjoy
working out, writing and reading. Though it's hard at times not
to be bitter and angry locked in a cell 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, I try to be good to others and to myself. If we're lucky,
we'll get to go outside twice a week here. Other than that, we're
in the cell. Mentally I consider myself pretty strong but at times
it does get lonely for me. I enjoy meeting new people from all cultures
and am interested in other people's likes and dislikes. I have no
kids and have been married once, 10 years ago. I'll end this now
and hope you may find time in your day to write me a letter. Thank
you for your time and have a great day!

I am writing in hopes of establishing a pen-pal relationship and

I was born in Mexico (Guadalajara Jalisco, to be exact). I came
from low-income families back in Mexico. My little brother Cris
and I both stayed back with our grandmother while both my parents
came across the border illegally to work hard and give us decent
lives. (unfortunately not so decent for me).
We always lived in the Los Angeles County Area, East L.A., West
L.A., Compton and New South Central Walls.
I’ve always been a bad boy. The bad sheep in the family.
Always getting into trouble: ditching school, ditching my communion
classes (I’m Catholic). Getting into fights, grabbing girls
imappropriately. I was just a problem child. Maybe its because of
my separation from my parents when they left us back in Mexico?
Whatever the reason may be, I was not very different from many of
the guys who’ve ended up in here.
I’m a grown man now, wiser, and (somewhat) educated.
I grew up surrounded by violence so the only thing I’ve ever
understood and learned was violence. My father was violent, just
angry and violent. I guess because he must have been dealing with
so much stress, he became an alcoholic and violent with my mother.
I tried to fight him and defend her. I was only 8 or 9 at the time.
Were were living in Compton. That was in 1985.

Hello and thank you for taking an interest in my ad. My first name,
Jasper, is actually located in the Bible. It is one of the seven
stones that was found in the Jordon River of Seven Streams, When
God put all
seven together, he saw that they were of remarkable beauty. He decided
that if he would consolidate the stones, no man could ever match
the many different exquisite colors that he and only he could create.
So I

Puerto Rican. I am a certified paralegal, a high-school graduate,
and I’ve received my degree in business communications/management.
I am 34 years
of age, 6’ tall, and wish to become acquainted with people
of all ages, all walks of life. I have no prejudices and am open
for new friendships. I am looking for sincere and honest friendships.
I have no problem displaying my life to everyone. I hold no secrets,
nor do I harbor any skeletons. In responding to this ad, please
express yourself and feel free to ask any questions you like and
I would be happy to answer them truthfully. I have no family except
for my 13 year old son, whom I stay in touch with and do my best
to guide and support in every aspect of his young life. His name
is also Jasper. He plays football and he plays
defensive end. I am very proud of him and he is my continuing source
of oxygen. It has been hard on him, as well as me. His mother and
I are real good friends. Unfortunately, financially, my monies have
come to an
end as I fight strongly to prove my innocence. I would rather had
spent my monies providing for my son, but his tears and every day
inquiries have urged me to fight ferociously, so that he can have
his dad home
with him. Well, I am going to close and hope that you don’t
harbor any prejudices due to my current situation. I hope to make
your acquaintance soon. God bless.

I’m a 56-year-old Mexican man, especially interested in writing
and book publishing. I do not practice any religion formally. I
believe, as Edgar Cayce did, in the One God for all religions. I’ve
begun to practice Zen and Tai Chi for peace of mind. I am serving
a life sentence. I’m 5'7", 155 lbs. with black hair,
brown eyes and olive skin. I would preferably like to communicate
with Mexicans or Native Americans, but people of any race, gender

a lot in common with a person who knows a lot about writing or who
has published a book, but all communications have value. I would
love to write to someone who knows about writing books, structuring
paragraphs, and publishing because I’m writing a short story

I could use some help with it.

I’m 30 years of age, over 6’2, 226 lbs, solid muscular
build. I’m of Afrikan descent with dark brown eyes. I wear
a bald head with a goatee mustache neatly lined and trimmed. I’m
incarcerated for various charges and am serving a 99 to life sentence,

stumbling blocks can become stepping stones if we learn from our
mistakes, errors, and wrong life choices. Despite my incarceration

I am a Christian and have been serving the Lord Jesus Christ now
for some years. I am not looking for a romantic connection, but
rather would like to establish a friendship through which I could
enjoy some much needed fellowship. I am the only Christian here
in my pod (each pod consists of eight cells and usually 8 men) and
there is only so much that the men around me will hear of my faith.
I am a lifer and am not due to leave isolation any time soon. I
am 40 years old and was born in Texas in 1963, though we moved to
California when I was 9 years old. I am an avid reader of history,
whether it is Christian history, military,
or the history of empires such as the Greek, Roman, British, etc.
However, because I must spend more time in studying the Holy Scriptures,
I do not indulge in too much secular reading. I love to discuss
various topics and try to understand the root causes of things.
I am always striving to keep an open mind and at the same time not
to become a watered down Christian. I have accepted full responsibility
for my sins (crimes) and have asked God to forgive me. So I’m
not in denial or hiding anything. I accept my punishment as just,
and look forward to learning as much as I can until I fall asleep
(die) or the Lord Jesus returns. I love art, all kinds of music,
good food, and I like to learn about other cultures and people.
I think this is crucial because the Bible says one day we will judge
the world (1 Cor. 6:2, 3, 4-6), so I feel we should gain as broad
a perspective as we can. I would like to correspond with a friend
who is a genuine Christian, so that I could
have someone to share the Word and my friendship with. I think I
could learn from them, and also, they could ask me about this other
world and find out what it’s truly like to be living in the
devil’s playground. I will gladly answer any and all questions,
hoping to educate and be educated.

I am a 50-year-old Mexican from East Los Angeles. I have been here
since ’78 in the SHU with a life sentence. I have a better
chance at digging a hole to freedom that getting a parole date out

locked away for the better interest and safety of society, but you’d
be surprised how well adjusted we become. I’m getting by the
best I can and am looking for someone who can help me with my case
… a law student, attorney who’s into pro-bono work,
an
investigator, or anyone able to help me file an ‘ineffective

I’m a 44 year old Mexican American (Chicano). I’ve
been incarcerated since 1980. I’ve been in Pelican Bay SHU
since the day it opened in December 1989. I’m originally from
Southern California and grew up in an area known as Frogtown. I
was arrested in 1980 for supposedly being the accomplice in a murder/robbery
that took place in a convenience store. It was caught on video tape
and mine was the first trial in California that used video tape
as evidence. In 1982, I was convicted and sentenced to life without
parole and sent up to Old Folsom Prison. I went from Old Folsom
to San Quentin, getting out of there at the end of ’87 to
be transferred to New Folsom until early ’89. Then to Corcoran
SHU and then to Pelican Bay when it opened. Since I’ve been
in prison, I’ve lost touch with all family members and friends
from my youthful days. My days in the SHU are spent like most other
convicts - get up early, exercise, draw a little bit, play chess,
and keep up with current events. My number one vice is watching
novelas (Spanish soap operas). I am looking for someone to write
to, in the hopes of opening up a communication line to the outside
world and to having a little companionship and friendship. I don’t
have much to offer anyone other than emotional support, and a loyal
friendship. I’m open to all religious beliefs as long as its
not used to try and convert me. If you’re interested in finding

First I’d like to start by saying thank you for taking a
little time out of your busy day to visit this website and in particular
for reading my introduction. I’m 33 years old, 6 feet tall
and weigh 180 lbs. I have brown eyes and black hair. I know this
may sound just like every other drab introduction letter, but I’ve
never written an introduction like this to a pen-pal site before,
so I ask that you bear with me as I get through this. I’ve
been incarcerated for awhile now and don’t write much. But
I do write to my family. I’m pretty much an outgoing person
who takes a chance every now and then and enjoys meeting people.
Unfortunately, being in jail you don’t get to meet a lot of
people, so when I heard this website being advertised over the radio,
I became both happy and excited about having the chance to meet
you, and to learn about what your likes and dislikes are. Since
I’ve been here, I’ve learned a lot about myself: for
instance, I’ve found that I like art and literature amongst
other things. In fact, I’ve found that I enjoy learning about
almost everything. Just recently I’ve been given a chance
to take some college courses, and of course I had to jump at the
chance of getting a higher education. I couldn’t do it without
financial help from my family. And, speaking of family, I come from
a good-sized one. I have one sister and 4 brothers of which I’m
the youngest and of course most handsome (!) I would really like
to meet someone with an open mind and who doesn’t mind writing
in order to make a new friend. If you find yourself a little curious
then go ahead and send me a few lines. I promise to answer your
letter. Think of it this way: at the very least you’ll come
out of this experience with a new friend. Once again, thank you
for taking the time to read this letter. I can’t wait to hear
from you.

about different cultures. I guess you could say I enjoy a little
bit of everything and not too much of anything. I’m interested
in getting to know people from other places, exchanging stories
and sharing a few thoughts and opinions, along with some good laughs
and over all good conversation. A friend with a good head on their
shoulders, who knows how to laugh and can hold their own in a conversation
is what I’m looking for. If that’s you, and you can

Unfortunately, I find myself writing this while incarcerated, in
hopes of starting a pen- pal relationship and friendship. I’m
a 33 year old Mexican-American from San Gabriel Valley. I’m
5’10”, 170 lbs, short black hair, brown eyes and dark
chocolate skin, aka ‘sweet tootsie roll.’ I’ve
been away going on 9 years, but glad to say I’ll be getting
out in Nov of 2005. It’s only a skip, hop and a jump away.
I was born in Los Angeles and I basically was on my own since the
age of 12. I quit school and to avoid foster homes I had to do what
I had to do - turn into criminal activities to survive financially.
I was in and out of Juvenile Hall. Icame to state prison at the
age of 20, I got out when I was 25. It was tough to stay out, I
really do believe I was still with a
destructive state of mind. Not knowing what I wanted in life, I
was just a body who was there. To make a long story short, I came
back 4 months later to do a violation of 30 days. Unfortunately,
something happened in prison and I ended up with 9 years for assault
with a weapon. Most of
that time was spent in the hole (S.H.U.). I’m in the cell
23 hours a day with no telephone calls or any contact with loved
ones. It’s a tough situation to be in, but as a man, one must
accept the consequences of one’s own actions. I can now say
that I have a whole different way of thinking and of looking at
life. I’m ready to get out. Know it ain’t gonna be easy,
I have no idea what awaits for me, I’ve been expecting the
worst and hoping for the best. So if you are someone who wants to
know more of me and get to know the person that I am please don’t
hold back. Feel free. I am a good person with lots of smiles to
offer.

I am 36 years of age. I was born and raised in Fresno, California
and as a young man, I allowed myself to fall into the bosom of negativity, which
landed me in this situation. As for my personal description, I am
5’8” tall, 198 lbs, black long hair and brown eyes.
I write this with pure and positive meanings in hopes that something
productive is formed from this. I’m looking for a pen pal
who will give a man such as me a chance to come into their world
through correspondence. I am very outspoken, as well as educated
and sophisticated. In my leisure time I enjoy reading and keeping
fit. I believe I’m going that extra step in
life by putting forth a serious effort to overcome, as well as totally
defeat, all obstacles designed to impede progress. The pen pal who
responds must have intentions directed in the benefit of us growing
constructively as people communicating on prosperous levels, understanding
and accepting each other for who we are. Well, if I’ve captured

with someone special from the outside world. I just want a pen pal
with a nice heart and a good sense of humor that’s willing
to share some tips with me about how life is in the outside. In
fact, all different types of tips, that’s what I really need
so I could prepare myself better about how to face society. I been
down awhile so if my writing skills are a little rusty I apologize.
Well here goes the rest of my info but with more details. I’m

of my body is full of tattoos. I also got a good sense of humor,
plus I’m sincere. I been honest so if somebody is interested
in writing, I’m not going to give you any jail talk or drama,
I’m going to keep it real. Because I’m a real man. I’m
going to appreciate if a nice human being writes to this handsome

hope that somebody out there is willing to give me an opportunity
to be their pen pal and to share our thoughts. Muchas gracias.

I’m a 32-year-old mature black man, born under the zodiac
sign of Aries, April 2, 1972. I was born in a small part of the
Bay area known as Richmond, and raised in an even smaller area known
as (NARF) North Richmond. I’m the very very very proud father
of a beautiful young Queen, name Ms. Kiyanni Jasmine Brown (that’s
my diamond), also born April 2, 1999. I stand 5’6”,
I weigh in at 185 lbs, I’m physically fit, well groomed, very
outgoing, and, most important, I am house broken. As we both know
from my return address, my life is restricted by bars of steel,
walls of concrete and cold lonely nights. Please do not
misunderstand my situation, I'm not here for some sick, twisted,
deranged, psychopathic reason. My situation derives from my infatuation
with fast money and the lifestyle it allowed me and my family to
live. I was caught with large amounts of heroin, coke and pot (I’m
not a user of hard drugs, but I love pot). I’ve been locked
up since Oct 3rd, 1999. At any rate, I wasn’t totally illegal,
I found time to attend community college, known as ContraCost College,
studying Business Management, Business Administration and Accounting.
That’s why I say don’t allow my situation to cloud your
judgement about Travell. There’s a lot more to him, trust
me. I love to write letters, poetry and music. Well, I’ve
opened a tiny, tiny bit about myself, so I’d enjoy if you’d
allow Travell a peek at your likes and dislikes. What’s your

Massachussets. Though I’m serving two (consecutive) life sentences,
I’m making the best of it. It’s all about maintaining
a good attitude, and a positive outlook towards life.
I’m interested in long-term correspondences/friendships,
with people who are willing to share from their own windows on life.
I do appreciate the time anyone takes to write, and although the
mail is sometimes very slow, I always answer.
I am an artist, and spend many hours each day on my art work. I
enjoy drawing, reading, writing, music and exercise; as well as
humor. I miss many of the things that I no longer see or have.
I’ve learned how to appreciate the fine things in life that
I used to take for granted. I would really enjoy hearing from anyone
out there who is seeking a true and genuine friendship. Photos would
be most welcome, however Polaroids are not allowed.
The qualities that I look for in a friendship are honesty, intelligence
and a great sense of humor. Any time you spend with me will be treasured,
and any correspondence I receive will surely brighten my day.
And on that note, I will close. If you’re interested in getting
to know me better, put your pen to paper and introduce yourself.
I look forward to meeting you!

I’m a 39-year-old Latino artist. I heard about the Pen Pal
Program and think it is a great idea, cause some of us here don’t
have any mail coming. We don’t have access to the internet
or the means to put up ads on a pay site. It’s rough to see
the mailman just zoom by without stopping at the cell door. I’ve
been down for 20 years with 8 left to go. As you many have heard,
time moves very slow here at PBSP. I’ve been in isolation
since 1987. The longer I stay here, the fewer relatives and friends
are left behind.
I need to keep in touch with society. It’s the best way to
remain sane. Without outside communication, people here can go insane.
And they do. There must be someone out there who would like to communicate
with
someone like me, but don’t know how and where to reach us.

I’m taking this time to reach out and share some conversation
with sincere, open-minded individuals. As you can see I’m
tucked away at the infamous Pelican Bay, but don’t let that
discourage you. Be strong of
heart. I may be physically imprisoned, but with my pen as my vehicle,
I’m mentally and spiritually free.
Before, I found myself at the Bay Resort, I lived in sunny Los
Angeles. I miss all those sunny days, as I’ve been in the
system now for a little while. But don’t panic, I’m
not in the newspapers, and not that mean
desperado that robbed banks and they never found the cash.
I’m seeking to meet someone I can kick it with and exchange
ideas, someone who could help me experience the world through his/her
eyes and heart. But most importantly, a friend. Seeing how true
friends are in short supply these days and I would give a loyal
friend the respect and consideration he/she deserves. So, if you
feel up to the task, spill a little ink my way, and I’ll be
sure to bounce back your way.

I like to draw from time to time. I am very goal oriented, and have
a positive attitude. I consider myself to be intelligent, open minded,

I believe it would be a positive experience for both me and someone

I learned to speak and understand Spanish through those friendships.
I was arrested and convicted at the age of 20, and have been in

people aspired to be gang members and drug dealers. In any case,
I chose the Mexican

Fortunately for me, I got a second chance to succeed in the world.
I’m looking forward to paroling in early 2006 but I’m

at one of California’s finest resorts: Pelican Bay State Prison,

seeking a Pen Pal with hopes of building a strong friendship.
To give a brief description of myself, I’m clean cut with
black hair, brown eyes, and a mustache. I work out religiously,
so I'm in tip-top shape. I'm an artist and I like to draw in my
spare time, but that’s just one of my many talents. I’m
currently a college student (via

goal is to acquire a Bachelor’s degree in business. I tend
to spend my time wisely in my efforts to make the best of the situation
in a positive way in order to prepare myself for the future and
my eventual release to the competetive world of a free society.
I have never been one to let life pass me by despite my many years
in solitary confinement (SHU), always engaging in ways that will
help me become a better man. But it’s patient people on the
outside who help us grow We come from a small world and live in
an even smaller one We need to see a bigger picture.

providing me with a window to the outside, don’t hesitate

As I begin this letter I hope you are surrounded by the love of

My name is Richard Marquez and I am an identical twin. My twin
brother's name is Nick Marquez #V-25975. He is my cellie here at
Pelican Bay Prison, we're both 30 years old (Nov).
Growing up I made some very poor decisions. I came from a rough
part of Southern California and like many young people, I was easily
moved by the thought of fast money and was fooled into thinking
my friends meant more to me than family. I know now I was wrong.
I'm not saying friendships are wrong, on the contrary I value a
true friendship.
My life has had its share of both good times and bad times. My
little brother Sean was killed in 1992 and my parents passed away
in June of 2003. Those moments have pulled at my heart, but I'm
grateful for the time we had together. From their loss, I've also
learned to enjoy today.
Dr. M. L. King Jr. said, the ultimate measure of a man is not
where he stands on moments of comfort and convenience but where
he stands at times of challenge and controversy. So I let those
words remind me to
make the best of this situation. May God bless you.

I am currently housed in the SHU under an indeterminate status.
Perhaps you already know the way we have to live here - no contact
with another
human being for 24 hours a day. But no matter what, many of us here
strive for education, and educate ourselves as much as possible.
I mainly try and get my hands on books that help me understand different
aspects of life and the meaning of different cultures because, through
it all, I find all human beings to have much in common, disregarding
color and race. I disregard these two things because an individual
becomes himself from what he is able to understand and whether he
accepts it or not, and what he chooses to do is based on the knowledge
he acquires.
In reading, I try to stick to non-fiction, keeping with an
open mind, but here and there I'll read a novel. I have also been
trying to learn about the law to know my rights, since much of the
time many of us end up being convicted mainly because we have no
knowledge to be able to defend ourselves according to the law. Especially
in these times, many of our lives are taken like a game to the system.
I also spend some
of my time drawing, throughout my years doing time I've got pretty
good at it. I try to draw a little bit of everything, just being
creative.

I am 29 years old in my thirteenth year of incarceration. You might
say I am outgoing and enjoy life & even behind these walls.
We all have a life to live and I'm just living mine. I can't sit
here and say I'm lonely, but the opportunities to meet new faces
from beyond these walls is non-existent. I love to hear about others
and what their life is about. The places you go and the things you
do are fascinating to me.
It's a change of pace.
Over the years, the friends I've had have gone their separate ways
but one doesn't forget a real friend. I just understand that their
lives and responsibilities continue and if it's meant to be we shall
meet again,
because I am here for as long as these concrete walls continue to
stand. So I write these thoughts in hopes to meet a friend to share
a day, a week, a year, for as long as you can keep up. I am here.
My interests are many as any young man's would be. I spend my days
exercising, reading and drawing, trying to expand myself mentally,
physically and spiritually. I grew up in sunny San Diego, the eldest
of three brothers. And even though I am incarcerated, I am hopeful
for the future.
I wonder if there's a friend out there that wants to share their
thoughts with me. Until then, many thanks to all those who browse
this site. Nobody wants to be alone and we are no different. We
have just made mistakes and made poor decisions, but I believe I
still have good to give because my heart is good, it just took a
while to realize it.

If you're hitting on this web site, you've found another inmate
in need of company and though yes it may seem common given the predicament
I'm in, you'll see a solid guy who'll give you lots of conversation
that'll
help us both grow to know each other. I'm funny, sincere and most
of all will be very truthful with you in all things. I'll be glad
to answer any questions you have.
I'm out of Fresno, California, and am Mexican American. My hobbies
include drawing, reading and some studying. I am open to exchanging
pictures, letters, maybe even in time, visits. I will answer all
letters as soon as I receive them.
