Robert Dainty

To whom it may concern,

I am incarcerated and have been for the last 20 years with no release date ahead. I like to write a lot and I’d like to seek a pen pal on the same level who would like to communicate in the form of letters.
Over the years, most of the people I had known before coming to prison have either moved on in life or death, and for that reason I sit and write short stories about myself, to myself. All I really need is a friend or someone to share the lonely part of me that would like to communicate about anything that interests you and I.
All is very welcome, I’m no judge.

Brant Daniel

I'm an inmate from Sacramento with no correspondence with the outside world. I'm 29 years old; I'd like to correspond with folks beyond these walls. I've been locked up for 10 years and still have some time to go. I'm a very relaxed person and I just like to enjoy life. I want to say thank you for taking time of yours for us convicts who don't have anyone.

Dari Dawkins

I am 36 years old, of African/West Indian heritage. My hobbies are reading, writing poetry and music, playing chess, staying healthy, sharing meaningful conversations, expressions of music, laughter and the
beach. I like meeting new people.

I would like to write anyone kind enough to write to me. I am currently studying Child Psychology. My goal is to use my life experiences (i.e. prison) to help at-risk youth avoid crime, alcohol, drugs and violence.
I anticipate a release date of August 23, 2005. I'm very athletic, love to play sports. I've been a vegetarian for over 13 years. I'm very open
minded, liberal, loyal to friends, optimistic and still learning about life. I'm an Old World romantic, not religious – but very spiritual. I am mentally and emotionally healthy.

Douglas L. Dawkins

I am 36, SPV (single poetic vegetarian), a certified paralegal, writer, and student of yoga and meditation. I'm 5' 10", 190 lbs., and of African and Native American heritage. My eyes are the color of brandy and cinnamon. I have fathered no children (though I would love to be a father) and I have never married. At this moment I can honestly say I am emotionally, mentally, and spiritually ready to share in the harmony of friendship. I spend most of my time reading, writing, exercising, meditating and dreaming. Currently I am studying women's studies and constitutional law. For the last 36 months I have been in the SHU. I
have no family and no friends, no letters, no cards, nothing. I have to say that my best is my love of communication and loyalty. I do not smoke, nor do I have any drug or alcohol history. I enjoy jazz and
soulful music, blues, country, and some reggae. I love to hear myself sing! I enjoy crazy laughter, romantic movies, books, and sunsets. I love to camp, hike and fish. I am a child of the Bay Area in northern
California. I am addicted to anything apple flavored (pie, candy, juice, waffles) and I crave intellectual stimulation. I would like to write to a woman between the ages of 21 and 50. Race, and religion are not an
issue (I am of the universal mind). I will write to anyone kind enough to write to me.

I'm looking for a fun, adventurous correspondence. My intentions are to make friends around the globe, and hopefully share a few laughs. Before my misfortune, I was raised on a horse ranch in a southern California town called Norco. I've been brought up with good ol' fashion country
manners and morals. My hobbies are art, playing chess and letter writing. I have a release date of March 2007. If you're interested in writing a good ol' fashion country boy, then I would love to hear from you.

Jacob DeLashmutt

Hi. I am from the Central Coast of California and am unfortunately very far from home. I am 25 and have been incarcerated for nine years. I enjoy writing writing to my friends and family and would like to correspond with anyone who may be interested in writing to me, age,
race and gender don't matter. It is always nice to meet new people and share experiences - lets me know I'm still human.

I have a pretty big family and they have been very supportive of me while I am in here. I have three sisters and two brothers who I write to regularly. I feel very lucky to have their support. Right now I am trying to get closer to home so I can see everyone more often. I have been moved from one prison to the next all over the state due to the yards that I was on were turned over to make room for Protective Custody Inmates. First I was at Corcoran, only an hour from my folks place, they turned it to a P.C. yard and therefore shipped all General Population Inmates all over the state to wherever they could find room. I was sent to Sacramento. Just when I was settled in and had a friend
nearby coming to see me a few times a month, theychanged that yard into a P.C. yard and sent me to Lancaster. I was there for four years and it was close enough for my grandma to come see me from Nevada and my family was also close enough to some see me. Then they turned that one to a P.C. yard and shipped everyone out. It's like playing the lottery and I got the furthest prison north they could find. So I am trying to be good and hopefully get a ride back down south.

Meanwhile, I'm working on a few writing projects and spend my days studying and writing and typing on my manuscripts. I would really enjoy meeting new people and writing back and forth to pass the time. I hope that you are interested and that I hear from you soon.

Robert Dennino

I’m looking for a connection to the outside world. I’m currently in SHU (isolation) and I’ve been down for 17 years. Let me start by saying that it’s really cool that there are people out there who care about those of us in here. I’m 39 years old, Mexican and Irish. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I have a bald head, hazel eyes; I’m 5’10 and weight 150 pounds. I do have some tattoos, but I’m not covered in them. I’m looking for someone to write on any level , but someone who isn’t into games. I like intelligent conversation, though I enjoy good times. I’m really into music (all types, but partial to rock), I enjoy reading generally, poetry especially, which I also write. I’ve never had a pen pal for, so it should be fun! Here’s something I wrote in 2005:

Emerald

Buried deep in emerald
Tucked in jade but not jaded
Abrosiatic scents pitch the senses
To a comforting cant
Mental elements coast
Under foot and over mind
Birds sing soaring
From piney branch to leafy bought
Verdant vision wrapped around being
Engulfed in infinite swaying arms
Held close to Mother Earth’s heartbeat
An overwhelming feeling of being home

Carlos Dia

11/05/09

Hi, my name is Carlos, I’m 51 years old and I was born in San Diego where I grew up in a barrio called Logan Heights, with my younger brother and 4 sisters. I am the oldest. My mother and father raised me but I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house…. My Nana and Tata as I affectionately call them. All my my happy memories come from those long ago days, riding my bike, exploring the whole neighborhood with me and my best friends. We were a poor family but I never knew it till I grew up. But there was plenty of love and I was happy, well most of the time. Of course I was a trouble maker. Well, I didn’t make trouble, I just always found myself in trouble going in and out of Juvenile Hall and youth authority where I spent most of my teen years. I’ve been in prison now since 1977, that makes it 32 years which I never in my worst nightmare would have guessed I could do such a long sentence for first degree murder. I got a 7 to life which meant at that time I could possibly be out in 10-15 years. But the way the world looks now, the tunnel gets darker and darker, can’t see any more light. So I try not to think about it much and just be myself, telling jokes, smiling and not getting stressed out. I practice yoga each day, I work out and run laps outside, and I enjoy taking naps! I am also a vegetarian, not too extreme, I do eat boiled eggs and drink milk.
Well mt friend, I hope you decide to respond and hopefully we can develop a good correspondence and friendship. Feel free to ask me anything.
Till then, take care and God Bless.

I’m a 35-year-old Hispanic man, born in San José, CA but raised in Monterey County. I have 11 months to go on a four-year sentence. I’ve been doing a long SHU term (isolation), in my cell for 23 hours a day with an hour to pass in a little dog run attached to the cell. I work out, draw, and lately have taken up writing. I hope too meet someone I can share my writings with and get some feedback off what they think? Nothing else matters as long as you’re a smart lady who smiles easily.

Danny Dixon

Hello. I truly hope that these words have found you in the best of health in mind, body and spirit. I am writing this script in the hopes of finding someone who is also in search of intelligent, comforting conversation
I am an inmate at Pelican Bay State Prison doing a space of time away from society for not being…so good. However, let me assure you that I have not deprived anyone of their life or committed a violent act upon any man, woman or beast. I merely became greedy for worldly possessions. (more details to follow upon request)
I can only assume that since you are reading this script that you are also seeking positive correspondence, so let me formally introduce myself.
My name is Danny. I’m African American. I’m 27 years young and seeking a woman to correspond with preferably of Hispanic, Native American or Asian descent, who is also interested in experiencing a new personality. I’m not exactly sure what you may expect from me other than words, I however, only desire to make a new friend and hopefully kindred spirit to help me maintain a peaceful mind through correspondence and prayer. I hope to hear from someone soon Thank you for your time and consideration.

I'm a 23-year-old man of black and Mexican parentage, though I'm an orphan, born and raised in the system and incarcerated here at Pelican Bay since 2001. It's a depressing life and real easy to give up hope. Often, I do. I'm not in contact with anyone in the outside world so I'm excited about this chance to start a friendship with someone beyond these prison walls. I'll be waiting with hope. Thank you!!! Whoever you are, for taking the time to explore and coming across. I am a man in need of someone who is smart, caring, friendly and who loves conversation. I am a 41 year old man who is trying to become a better person while I am here so that I will be a changed man and can hopefully come home to start a new life with someone special. This is my first time in prison and for sure my last, (trust that!).
I have brown eyes, brown skin, weigh about 200 lbs, stand 5’11”. I was born and raised in Watts, California and would love to leave the State on day. Really, I’m just hoping that I will meet someone who’s got their head on right and wants to be on my team. I’m looking for a special friend to be around when I need some words of encouragement and to just know that someone is here for me.
I’m gone for now until I hear from a special friend.

I am currently serving a 16 month sentence and am paroling on Feb 1st, 2010, which is right around the corner!
I was looking for a pen pal as I have no family and was hoping that by conversing with them, and hopefully you, that it may make the days go by a little faster.
A little about myself: I was put in foster care at 15 years of age, and haven’t been able to shake the system ever since. I wish to attend an Ivy League College someday, preferably Harvard. I’ve been down since 1996 so I’m just looking for someone who is open minded and is willing to share thoughts and to maybe make a new friend.

Jeffrey Emerson

I am writing in hopes of establishing a pen-pal relationship and enjoying someone's conversation outside of this mad house I live in. I have been in prison for 12 years, 8 of them in solitary confinement. I love to make people laugh and at the same time laugh right along with them. I am very straightforward and don't play mean jokes on others. I appreciate life and the good experiences that come along. On another note, I spend some of my time with my hobby, which is drawing. Of course, I study and do research on legal matters. I am 32 years old and keep in shape through daily exercise. I will pull this pen over for now and put it in park, hoping I have triggered someone's curiosity. Until then, take care and God Bless.

Louie Esquivel

08/24/09

My name is Louie Esquivel. I’m a 40 year old Mexicano from Los Angeles, California.
I like to read books, almost anything at least once. I also study about my culture and other subjects, things to enhance my intelligence. I am also into drawing, keeping myself in shape by working out. I am happy to say that I am a mentally and physically strong person.
I am seeking someone who enjoys the things I do, race doesn’t matter. I also write and read and habla Espanol. I’m sure there is a woman out there who would like a pen pal as myself, to keep each other company, because a person can be lonely even out there with many people around, and it’s not a good feeling. Let me bring a smile to you!
I have been incarcerated since 1997, and in Pelican Bay SHU since 1999, I’m around men all day. I feel it’s good to have a woman to talk to and listen to and have her point of view on things in life. Take a chance on me…. Alright?!
I’ll bring this introduction to an end. I’d like to say thank you for your time, I’ll be waiting to hear from you. Come along, I’m sure we can make this a fun ride!

08/24/09

First and foremost, I thank you for opening a line of communication with the outside world.
My name is Jaime Ignacio Estrada. I’m a 35 year old Mexican and I’ve been incarcerated for 16 years. I am 5’5” and 165 lbs with a lot of tattoos all over. I have a picture if needed.
I have been in Segregated Housing Unit for a few years now. I try to read as much as possible. Education will change m y life I believe. I read pretty much anything educational and I write some poetry. I’m not that good but it helps me express my hidden feelings. I also study a lot of Law books and I’m trying to work on my own case, it distracts my mind from isolation and negative thoughts.
I hope a pen pal can help me break out of my shell and see there’s still life inside of me.
Thank you for your time and support without even knowing me.

Barrett Juston Fadden

08/24/09

I am 32 years old, of Scottish and English decent. This is my first time in prison, and unfortunately I am serving a life sentence. I came to prison with 2 strikes for carjacking and was struck out in 2005 for “possession of State issued razor blades”, which, according to our legal system constitutes as a “deadly weapon”.
I deeply regret the mistakes I have made in life and am trying to live a better life now, and help other inmates escape a degenerate and destructive lifestyle that was my own downfall.
I have started a magazine here in prison called “The Vikings”, which is filled with inspirational speeches, drawings, poems, songs and quotes. But most importantly it is a guide to success from the prospective of a failure. That may sound unsound but it has had a lot of success. Although I have yet to put out an issue here at Pelican Bay (I just recently got here), my faithful kinsmen have continued the magazine in Tehachapi SHU and also Corcoran SHU. I have also started two books, the first on mixed martial arts and the other is a fiction, but the characters are all trying to fix the very real problems in America. It’s actually really good. I thought I would spend more time writing about grappling, that is what I am passionate about, but it has turned out to be the opposite.
I also spend a lot of time drawing, writing inspirational speeches or compositions, writing poetry, studying history, psychology, philosophy and generally anything that will make me smarter. Right now I’m trying to learn German. I don’t have a clue what I would ever do with that ability, but it is extremely difficult and that has an appeal to me.
I’m not sure how this pen pal thing works, I would gladly write to anyone. However if there is a choice I would like to write a female. I’m not looking for a relationship, but as you know, the prison environment consists of strictly men, and we are deprived of the lighthearted and emotional qualities of women.
Alright, I am going to close for now. All my respects and high regards remain with you. I hope to hear back soon. Until then…

I hope and pray that as you read this letter you will be inspired and have a beautiful day. As you can see I have made some mistakes in my life. As for the last 2 years I have been trying with all my mind and all my soul to have a mindful thought process.
Two and a half years ago something happened to me that killed my heart and soul. It was when I woke up in jail that I saw a vision of an angel lifting up a man and it was that moment that I had this epiphany and a visual insight like I was already there. And this insight was to draw 100 angels by the time I get out, and it’s these realistic angels that will inspire people from all walks of life.
If you have a story, it would be an honor to hear what you have overcome and are going to overcome. Give me that spark of inspiration so that I can get ideas and draw and draw.
God bless and have a blissful day.

I am a 41-year-old Chicano presently looking to start a friendship with an individual who is willing to get to really know me as I am willing to know them.

I'm a native of San Francisco's Mission District and a very easy going, down-to-earth person. I like sports, I am a diehard San Francisco 49ers and Giants Fan. I like basketball too. I am an Orlando Magic Fan. I enjoy reading and writing. I like to read a variety of books including
history of the Aztecs, Mexicans, Chicanos, as well as other ethnic heritages. I am of a mixed Mexican/Italian background. I also like fiction, such as the novels of Jackie Collins, Lawrence Sanders, Dean Koontz and John Grisham. I am open to all areas of conversation for I
have my opinions on things too.

I am trying to read, write and speak in Spanish. I never learned how to speak any other language but English. But I am now learning and it would be nice to have someone to help me practice reading and writing in Spanish.

Well I believe that's about all for now. Hopefully, I will get lucky and find someone out there who wants to write and get to know me for who I am. Surprise me.

Dumar Fisher

I am 27 years old and currently housed here at Pelican Bay with many years left to do, and I am in serious need of a friend or just someone to talk to, every once in a while.
Since being in prison I have lost contact with friends and family, and I think it’s fair to say that everyone has given up on me completely. I think that is one of the worst feelings a person can ever experience. However I am not one to look for pity, just understanding and some kind of support.
I know you must have those lonely days and nights when you find yourself wanting someone to keep you company and befriend you in a time of need, or just to have that someone who can help you see things clear, and most importantly, help you smile. I love to smile and fell good…it just brings the world of joy and even though I’m in prison, I’m still a person, and a fun loving person who has the world to offer.
I love to write letters. That has become my passion and my way of getting away from here, just going into another world and being able to feel free for that short period of time. I love to watch the sun go down and picturing myself in different surroundings. I enjoy making people laugh and drawing. I love slow music, it really doesn’t matter which kind. Right now my favorite song is called ‘Beautiful’, by James Blunt.
I am from Los Angeles, California. I love fast cars and bikes and enjoy going to the beach and watching the waves at night.

I hope you can find yourself writing me and getting to know me.

Respectfully,

Armando Flores

Hello there, my name is Armando Flores and I’m a 43 years old Hispanic male, I was born in the town of French Camp but raised in my good ol’ hometown of ladi California, right in San Joaquin County Valley. I am of Mexican descent and speak fluently both in Spanish and in English I’ve been incarcerated in prison for the past 24 years, 18 of them here at Pelican Bay (SHU) nevertheless I’ve spent them constructively and in positive manner. I’m quite an easy going type of person that’s very creative, conversationalist and open minded. I like to spend my time reading books on subjects like: History, psychology and novels, pretty much anything I can learn from that stimulates my intellectual mind and help me understand things at different levels. As a hobby I like to engage my artistic talent on animated graphical characters. I like to listen to a variety of music but in particular to oldies and Mexican music but I enjoy all types of music. Sports wise I’m a raiders fan.
What I’m seeking is to correspond with anyone in general who is interested in writing me with the intentions of establishing a good friendship. If you’ve caught a spark of interest this far, then by all means be sure to drop in on me and say hi…

Manuel Flores

At the age of 30 it has become apparent to me that one cannot walk a fine line for any significant time without having a stumble or two. I would be easy to blame my incarceration on a dysfunctional family, but the truth is that I come from a wonderful home. My parents worked hard to provide for me, they instilled values not only with words but by example. Maybe the blame should fall on the notorious city of Los Angeles where I was born and raised? Or, the vicious gangs that it's
known for? I wish that it was that easy, but L.A. has been good to the Flores family. My incarceration is not due to not having goals. I wanted to play professional baseball or football, and many thought I had i .
I wanted to attend college, get married, have kids and be able to provide for them. It's proof that one should be careful of what one wishes for! I played semi-pro baseball until I got hurt. I had to come to prison to take college courses. I got married to a beautiful woman at the age of 20, and had 3 wonderful kids, who are my reason for living. It took several break - ups to realize that she was not for me. So, who can I blame for being placed in prison with a 15 year sentence (9 of
which I have done)? The answer is me. I am responsible for everything that happens to me and that is why I am trying to use my incarceration to better myself. Education is my priority, along with creating an
opportunities for myself so that when I return to the real world I can be significant in society and be a representative of the Flores family that my kids can be proud of. I understand that in my quest I need
mentors, counsellors, and friends and most of all conviction. If you are touched by anything I have said I encourage you to drop me a line and I will surely reply.

Johnathan Edward Flowers

I am a 34-year-old African American from San Diego. My present life feels a million light years removed from the life I once had, but I still feel compelled to share myself with hopes of finding a true friend. I am a chef by trade. I love to cook all kinds of food but the
grill is my favorite. I have a saying, give me a grill, and I'll give you a great meal!

Growing up in San Diego, I played a lot of sports -
football, baseball, basketball and boxing. I was raised by my great grandparents in a house full of uncles and cousins. I have a rather large family but right now my two sisters are my only link to the outside world. I thought I built a bridge when I was free by having a
good job and being the one my family could always rely on. But not a lot of family have crossed that bridge to reach out to me. I know I must accept my situation and learn to bear its short comings, but I am still hopeful. Hopeful to find a friend to talk to. My interests include
chess, writing, exercising and reading. I'm in search of a good person, male or female, to become a friend. I hold no prejudices whatsoever and I look forward to corresponding with sincere, reliable human beings.
Thanks for your time.
