Alberto Acosta

First I'd like to start by saying thank you for taking a little time out of your busy day to visit this website and in particular for reading my introduction. I'm 33 years old, 6 feet tall and weigh 180 lbs. I have brown eyes and black hair. I know this may sound just like every other drab introduction letter, but I've never written an introduction like this to a pen-pal site before, so I ask that you bear with me as I get through this. I've been incarcerated for awhile now and don't write much. But I do write to my family. I'm pretty much an outgoing person who takes a chance every now and then and enjoys meeting people. Unfortunately, being in jail you don't get to meet a lot of people, so when I heard this website being advertised over the radio, I became both happy and excited about having the chance to meet you, and to learn about what your likes and dislikes are. Since I've been here, I've learned a lot about myself: for instance, I've found that I like art and literature amongst other things. In fact, I've found that I enjoy learning about almost everything. Just recently I've been given a chance to take some college courses, and of course I had to jump at the chance of getting a higher education. I couldn't do it without financial help from my family. And, speaking of family, I come from a good-sized one. I have one sister and 4 brothers of which I'm the youngest and of course most handsome (!) I would really like to meet someone with an open mind and who doesn't mind writing in order to make a new friend. If you find yourself a little curious then go ahead and send me a few lines. I promise to answer your letter. Think of it this way: at the very least you'll come out of this experience with a new friend. Once again, thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I can't wait to hear from you.

Arcadio Acuna

I am a 55-year-old Mexican-American who has been locked up for going on 25 years, and slowly but surely have lost touch with what little family I have left. I am a man of varied interests, am what they call a jailhouse lawyer. Over the years I have been active in pursuing prison issues in the courts and also have helped more people than I can remember to pursue appeals of their criminal convictions in both state and federal courts.
I am an avid reader, and especially like anything to do with Mexican culture and history. I read and write Spanish and from time to time have been known to compose poetry if given the right inspiration.
Oh, and before I close let me say I am a big guy, 6”, 200lbs, shaved head and Aztec bronze skin tone.

Victor Acuña

My name is “Terco”. I’m 39 years old, approximately 5’9” and about 200 lbs. I’m of Mexican descent and grew up in Bassett, east of L.A. I’m bilingual, respectful, loyal and kind of shy at first. I have a sense of humor, which one must have in this place. I’m a pretty easygoing person.
I’m incarcerated at Pelican Bay’s security housing unit and we are locked up in the cell all day, although we do have the option of going out to a concrete yard for an hour and a half every day. I’ve been up here for a few years now. Since I’m not much of a writer my conversation might be somewhat limited so I’m looking for a pen pal to help break the monotony and maybe even catch a couple of visits while I’m at it. I still have some time left on my sentence so I’m not looking for a wife, maybe just a good friend who I could trust. So if you’re married with kids or engaged, it’s all good and I will respect that, as long as you enjoy writing.
I stay busy by working out and reading. A few months back I enrolled in some college correspondence courses so I’m working on earning an associate in arts degree. This is basically what my days consist of. If you respond to my ad feel free to ask me whatever it is you would like to know about me.
Respectfully submitted, “Terco”.

Greetings and Salutations. I am 25, my height is 6 feet, my weight is 170 lbs, my hair is black, my eyes are brown. I've been patiently searching for an outgoing, spontaneous pen pal with a beautiful mind and spirit. I've been incarcerated for 7 years now and I truly miss hearing a sweet voice or receiving inspirational letters of substance. Write and let's get to know each other on any level of life.

So you are looking for someone to correspond with. Yeah, me too. I am 28 years old, from Stockton, California, hear at the Bay now but soon to be set free. I love to write, but this life is rather dull so I’m hoping you can be my inspiration. I would definitely try to be yours, so we can both have something to share and, who knows, maybe learn from each other as well. I am an avid reader, not of any particular subject. I just appreciate the fact that there’s something to learn in everything one reads. I enjoy most sports, both as a participant and spectator. I’m not an obsessive fan, but I do have my favorites – perhaps you’ll care to know which ones? I am a very social, friendly and down-to-earth person who likes to have fun. I just don’t have anyone to share my enthusiasm with. I am hoping to find friendship and meeting interesting people before I am set free. I admit that I can also use some people who can perhaps teach me or show me the ropes to life beyond these walls. If you think you are the right person, please write. May all your days be good ones.

Oscar Aguilar

My name is Oscar, I was born and raised in the city of East Los Angeles. I’m a Sagittarius, 5”9, I’m Hispanic, I weigh 180lbs I’m fairly built and I’m searching for a sincere pen pal. I have a lot to offer as a person. With all due respect I love to laugh, but when it’s time to feel another persons thoughts I can be very caring and respectful. I do have a big heart, I’m understanding in the time of need and friendly. Believe me, I’m a great person. I’ve made mistakes that have landed me in prison but please don’t let that stop you from introducing yourself.
Well, as you can see I’m really not good with introductions but I love to write and share my thoughts, love and respect. I’m hoping someone out there finds a little interest and gives me a chance to fulfill a pen palship! Feel free to ask me anything you desire. I’m not picky. I will be respectful and caring to whoever wants to write me.
I thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Mr Pen Pal.

11/05/09

Greetings all, just a few words of introduction. My aim is friendship with a pen mate whose enthusiasm allows her to enjoy a good laugh and whose wit will return the humor.
I am 37 years old, born and raised in Los Angeles. I have been in prison for 18 years. I am Always seeking friendly company who will inspire and motivate my days. Reading and writing has become part of my situation. Currently my interest lies with Ancient Civilizations and autobiographies, but subjects vary. A couple of my favorites are The Labyrinth of Solitude – Octavio Paz, because of my Mexican background, and In The Spirit of CrazyHorse – P. Matthiessen because I am Native American.
The enjoyment of writing derives not only from necessity, but from various activities that get me through the day.
If you sense a common interest here, fill me in on your likes and ideas. In return I pledge straightforwardness and honesty, the elements of a fun friendship.
I look forward to your letter,

Rodney Alcorta

Hi, my name is Rodney Alcorta, I’m 32 years old and I’m originally from Los Angeles. I am currently in Pelican Bay State Prison, but I hope my situation will not prevent you from writing to me. Please do not allow where I am at, to define who I am. Yes, I have made mistakes in my life, but I can honestly say that I am not the same young man who entered these prison walls 15 years ago. After all, I am sue you’re not the same person you were 15 years ago either.
I am not seeking financial or legal assistance. I’m simply seeking someone to write to, get to know, and hopefully someone to develop a friendship with. All are welcome to write and I will respond to all letters. Stamps are a luxury here, so you can guarantee that I am not going to waste on telling you lies. All I ask is that if you decide to write, you are genuine as well.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Jaime Aleman

I'm a 39-year-old Latino artist. I heard about the Pen Pal Program and think it is a great idea, cause some of us here don't have any mail coming. We don't have access to the internet or the means to put up ads on a pay site. It's rough to see the mailman just zoom by without stopping at the cell door. I've been down for 20 years with 8 left to go. As you many have heard, time moves very slow here at PBSP. I've been in isolation since 1987. The longer I stay here, the fewer relatives and friends are left behind.

I need to keep in touch with society. It's the best way to remain sane. Without outside communication, people here can go insane. And they do. There must be someone out there who would like to communicate with
someone like me, but don't know how and where to reach us.

I'm a 47-year-old African American man, of average height and strongly built. My zodiac sign is Gemini. I'm intelligent, caring and passionate with a broad understanding, and a wild sense of humor. I'm looking for a mature intelligent person of any race with a similarly wild sense of humor. Let this be the initial step towards constructing a bridge between us that we can cross into the sanctum of integrity and trust.

May our Father bring two hearts together as friends. I'm a 26-year-old black man,, patient and understanding. I'm not going to sell you no drag about what I could do for you, I just hope you can separate the real from the fake and give me a chance to be in your life. I like R & B and rap music, love drawing , working out, playing football, softball,
baseball, etc. I grew up in West L.A., in and out of group homes. .I've been in jail since the age of 17 for a crime I didn't commit. I have no kids and no woman in my life. I hope you can come and ride with me.

Kevin D. Allen

I'm 37 years old, born on July 6th. In L.A. General Hospital and grew up in Silverdale, WA. I was raised around horses and other animals.

I'm looking for someone who would like to build a friendship based on honesty. I'm in prison for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, I'm a 3 striker, receiving 25 to life for having a gun while on parole.

I don't have any family that writes to me. Friends have faded away for reasons that I can understand. I'm a lonesome fella and want to find someone who just wants to build a cool, nonjudgmental friendship.

I love all animals but I love dogs the best. I enjoy the mountains and hiking and camping. I read pretty much anything I can get my mitts on. I'm working on getting my G.E.D.

I enjoy music - country, rock, and blues. Pretty much if it sounds good, I like it, with the exceptions of jazz, classical, and rap. I enjoy working out and love most all sports. I believe in God but I don't worship. I read the Bible on occasion.

Well this is just a little bit about me. I extend to you a brief shout out with hopes of finding a good ear..

Fore mostly, I truly hope this brief introduction finds you in good health and high spirits, as I am.
My name is Steven and I’ve been very interested in building a friendship with an open and honest lady who enjoys writing and expressing herself.
Although I am incarcerated, it still hasn’t prevented me from being productive and living a goal orientated lifestyle. It won’t be long til freedom and one of my goals is to surround myself with those who have my best interests at heart. I have never worked a day in my life due to spending my entire adult life locked away. There’s so much I’ve yet to experience in this world and what I’d like is an adventurous companion who will lead me to happiness.
I like to write songs and a variety of poetry, drawing and hobby crafts are also things I enjoy. Aside from those I love to read, whether it’s novels or history or world events. Reading has always been a way for me to expand my horizon.
I am 5”8, 180 lbs, white Mexican with a golden brown compexion.
My rlease date is 2013

I'm taking this time to reach out and share some conversation with sincere, open-minded individuals. As you can see I'm tucked away at the infamous Pelican Bay, but don't let that discourage you. Be strong of
heart. I may be physically imprisoned, but with my pen as my vehicle, I'm mentally and spiritually free.

Before, I found myself at the Bay Resort, I lived in sunny Los Angeles. I miss all those sunny days, as I've been in the system now for a little while. But don't panic, I'm not in the newspapers, and not that mean
desperado that robbed banks and they never found the cash.

I'm seeking to meet someone I can kick it with and exchange ideas, someone who could help me experience the world through his/her eyes and heart. But most importantly, a friend. Seeing how true friends are in short supply these days and I would give a loyal friend the respect and consideration he/she deserves. So, if you feel up to the task, spill a little ink my way, and I'll be sure to bounce back your way.

Hello, I am a single 30-year old Mexicano. I have been in Pelican Bay since 1997, but have learned to view this adverse experience as a major lesson in life, rather than a fatal blow to my spirit as some would like to believe. I am especially interested in drawing and learning what I can about this country's laws. I've lost contact with my friends and relatives so I do look forward to finding pen friends willing to share some words and ideas. Letters would be greatly appreciated and reciprocated.

Marco Antonio

As time and opportunity presents itself I sit her writing these few words in hope of awakening someone’s curiosity.
For a long time now I’ve been feeling a bit lonely and forgotten.
Let me give you a brief intro about myself. My name is Marco Antonio, I was born May 5 1973.
To pass the time I enjoy reading, drawing, tattooing and writing poetry. I’m very athletic. I enjoy playing all sports, I like to keep myself in shape.
I am out of the City of Pomona, California, but since the age of 16 I have been incarcerated.
I’m searching for a woman who is caring, honest, outgoing and intelligent, who places importance not on looks or outer appearances, but rather in getting to know a person for whom he truly is.
Race is of no significance, I love all women.
I consider myself to be a reasonable, open minded individual who would like to find a friend, and with time, if friendship does flourish we both can share our thoughts, our good times and bad times with one another.
So if you understand where I’m coming from and fit the description, I would surely love to hear from you.
Thank you for your time and I hope I have awakened a lil’ curiosity in you.
One question before I put this pen to rest: Every person has a dream in life, a special wish that’s desired to come true. What is yours?

Respectfully,

Here's a little about myself: I'm 25 years old, single, born and raised in the Bay Area. I do have a release date in May 2006. I've been in prison since the year of 2000. I originally came to prison for a charge
of burglary, but picked up a little more time during my incarceration. I like to draw from time to time. I am very goal oriented, and have a positive attitude. I consider myself to be intelligent, open minded, easy to talk to. I am overall a good person, I just unfortunately
happened to come to prison.

I believe it would be a positive experience for both me and someone willing to correspond. I like music of all types, I'm a very interesting person once you get to know me. Now if I have ignited a level of interest in you, go for it and send me a letter. Your efforts in writing me will be much appreciated.

Greetings to all those women who manage the careful consideration in the application of reciprocal action, moreover if this message stimulates your perception and is eligible, then spill the ink so we can mix words and formulate harmonic melodies that engage the mental process.
As you may notice my wave is extended from behind these prison walls. I only hope this won’t prove to be a hindrance in the developing process of two people sharing a moment, exploring insights, clarity and struggles of each others lives.
My name is Carlos F. Arias. I am 32 years old, Mexican and I was born and raised in Sacramento, California. As for my incarceration: at the young age of 17 I was tried as an adult and convicted for a 187. Prior to this I was just an average kid who lost his way into the street life. However, I used this time as a tool to cultivate growth and maturity from my adolescent ways of thinking or acting. I still believe that there is always room for improvement, so I welcome new insight and ideas. I view myself as a positive and open minded person. I’m fortunately optimistically challenged and have a great imagination.
I enjoy studying sociology, psychology, history, philosophy and self help books. All these subjects are geared towards personal growth.
On a more personal note, I have a brother and two sisters who are younger than me, nieces, nephews, both parents and an extended family, all of which provide their support. So I’m not looking o use anyone. I believe that is morally wrong. However, I am looking to interact, and if something happens to flourish, I’m open, but my sole purpose is to correspond with you and build a line of communication.
I now conclude.
Sincerely,

08/24/09

Hello, my name is Phillip and I’m 29 years old. I am from California, the Bay Area. I am currently incarcerated, as you well know. It will be 8 years next year and I have a while before I’m released. I was fortunate enough to get a release date. In California that is quite uncommon, so I consider myself lucky. I try to keep up the positive attitude in all I do. Life is too short not to. I enjoy having a good time. I like to think I have a good sense of humor! I try to keep a smile on my faces well as those I am surrounded by, because it feels good to make someone else’s day.
My main focus is education. There is no limit when it comes to learning something new. I try to keep open minded and not limit myself to certain things.
Well, I also like to meet new people from all over. I like hearing about places I have never been to. When I was younger I used to travel a lot, so I have been fortunate enough to see outside of California. Not for long but I did have fun.
One thing I cannot live without is music. Again, I do not limit myself to one genre. If it catches my ear then it will work. I am limited right now but I do have my favorites.
I am looking for pen pals from all over. I try to stay in tune to the outside world as much as possible. So if you are an outgoing person and have a lot to say like myself, I don look forward to hearing from you.

For all of you out there, take care of yourselves and be safe.

Robert Malic Bailey

11/05/09

Hey world!
I really don’t know how nor where to start with this, I’ve never done this before. But like the saying goes, “there’s always a first for everything”. So I guess I’ll just sail with the wind and see where it may lead me.
For starters, my name is Robert Malic Bailey but to my close friends and family I’m better known as Malic, so please feel free to do the same. I’m mentally stable, emotionally at peace, finding my way spiritually, and physically healthy. I pride myself on my honesty, respect, humbleness and seeing the positive in anything life throws my way. I believe life is what you make of it, no matter if you slip, trip or fall, as long as you get back up and continue to follow your dreams.
If you ask me to best describe from a-z I would have to say, athletic, balanced, charming, dedicated, educated, funny, grounded, humble, intelligent, just, kind, loyal, moody, neat, observing, patient, versatile, witty, x-rated, youthful and zany.
I’m seeking someone who is positive, honest, genuine, willing to think/see outside if the box, non judgmental, willing to share their feelings, with someone who’s willing to listen.
Well, there’s a lot more I’d like to share but I’m going to end this the same way I came, with high hopes towards meeting a good friend. So hopefully as you read this brief introduction, during dome point you were able to take a liking to my character and seen something in me, in yourself, maybe, just maybe we’ll find a friendship in one another.

I'm a 53-year-old African-American man who has been incarcerated for thirty years. During this time, I have lost nearly all contact with family and friends on the outside. I'm 6'2" tall, weighing 200 lbs. I look and feel young and I'm physically fit. I love all sports and enjoy reading and writing. I'm liberal and open-minded. In a sincere effort to meet people for friendship, I appeal to anyone (women especially) who is compassionate, mature, down-to-earth, and has a good sense of humor. If you can let go of the stereotypes, I consider myself to be a decent human being, a man of integrity and high moral fiber. But you can judge that for yourself.

Johnny Barra

My name is Johnny. I am 32 years old, of Mexican/Native American descent and I am currently serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole. I have been incarcerated for a little more than 12 years now, most of which has been here at Pelican Bay (SHU).
For the most part I try to keep a positive attitude and outlook in regards to my situation. But as I’m sure you can imagine, life and time here on the inside can be a bit dim.
So I’m looking to brighten things up a little with some friendly, long distance company and companionship (smile).I really don’t have any specific preferences, as long as you are free spirited, open to sharing your thoughts, views and ideas, and enjoy writing, that’s all that matters.
I have a great sense of humor and take advantage of every opportunity to meet new people and learn about other life styles and cultures. So if you would like to write, you can send a short note or letter and I will write back A.S.A.P.

Manuel R. Barrios

I am a Mexican, born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. I am 32 years old, born on July 1, 1972. I am in prison on two counts of attempted murder. The circumstances are not complex, I am very open. I grew up in a gang-infested neighborhood. I spent most of my teenage years in the California Youth Authority, and all of my adult life in California State Prison.

In Prison I received my C.E.D. and I am currently working on my Associates Degree in Sociology/Psychology. I have two semesters left. My passion is for Mexican history. I speak, read and write in the Mexican language of Nahuatl. I hope that anyone who writes does speak, read and write in Nahuatl. Every now and then I encounter a fellow Nahuatlahton, it's rare though.

That's basically it. I wish to encounter fellow Nahuatlahtos to discuss the readings of our ancestors. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Hi, my name is Jeremy and I am writing this ad from the Security Housing Unit at Pelican Bay State Prison. I have been in the SHU since 1998 and in prison since 1994. I’m doing a life sentence for murder, a mistake I made when I was 20. I am 37 now and I believe that I have matured and seen the errors of my impetuous youth. I am looking to make a connection with someone special so that I can pass the time and stay in touch with the outside world.
I spend my time reading and studying whatever I can and I am also teaching myself to draw.

I'm looking for correspondence with interesting and reliable people. Let me tell you a litte about myself. I'm a black man from Long Beach, interested in fishing, bike riding, listening to music - rap, R&B,
oldies. I like taking walks on the beach, and watching the sun set. I like the outdoors - nature flowers, trees, football. I don't have any family, or anyone at all writing to me. I like to watch basketball and tennis. I'm feeling lonely and abandoned. I need someone who's going to be real, trustworthy, and truthful. I need someone who's going to be there in time of need, someone to talk to and be able to let them know
what's on my mind, someone to be real and honest. I've been locked up for 5 years and have 19 more to go. I'm looking for a continuing correspondence, but let's at least make a beginning.

I am a 27 year old Mexican, speaking English and Spanish. I was raised in Los Angeles, California. I enjoy educational activities such as reading and writing. Unfortunately I’m serving an eighteen year sentence. I’ve been incarcerated for six rough years so far. I have lost all of what was supposed to be the fun years of my life but I do all that I can to keep my spirits up. But I’m also very thankful for this experience. It has helped me grow in ways I may never have grown if not for this experience.
I’ve spent most of my imprisonment in pure isolation, and would be very thankful for an opportunity to correspond with anyone from the outside world. Even if it’s just for a short time.
Thank you very much for your time, with all sincerity and gratitude,

Costello Blackwell

I’m 33 years old. I was born on the 21 of February 1975. I’m a black Christian and a high school graduate with a degree in business and a B.A. in business management. My last jobs where teachers aide and exotic dancer. I’m 6’1”, 210 pounds (physically fit). My hobbies are mostly writing music and poetry but I’m working on my first fiction action novel. I also like to travel and I’m a bit of an outdoorsman. I love to hunt and fish but I could be just as content sitting at home having a nice home cooked meal with some cool conversation. Overall I just like to have fun and try to make sure that all who surround my life have fun and are happy.
Most would think and maybe even believe that being inside these walls would cause a man to loose his connections, confidence, passions, in and for life but also his conscience. In my case however I can really say that I have not lost any of that except for phony friendships.
I say that because I want whoever reads this to know and maybe even understand that, “yes” even though I am in prison finishing out my sentence. I breathe, live, sleep, bleed, laugh but most importantly “feel” just like you and my being in here has not made me a worse or better person. But the choices that I now make and believe in have allowed me to grow, mature and become even more confident, passionate and conscient of my actions, my value as a son, brother and in whole as a man.
I’m not looking for “love” here… I’m hopping only to meet someone that’s down with having some friendly sincere, consistent communications with someone who just like myself is open minded, non judgmental. I have no need or reason to want to enter your life to play games. So I’m looking for that same respect from a mature woman who knows what she wants.
Take care and God Bless.

J.C. Bobo

I'm a 43 year old European American. I've been incarcerated for the past 21 years for second-degree murder. I've been in the S.H.U. for 13 of those years. I'd prefer a female pen pal only becaue I've been surrounded by men and their gender-based conversations for the past 23 years, not because I want a girlfriend. But I don't discourage anyone from writing.

I enjoy art and I do portraits and heritage art. I also enjoy writing poetry, although mine does seem to be mediocre at best, but I do so enjoy it. I enjoy all outdoor activities - camping, sports, etc. I grew up in Southern California, Los Angeles and San Bernardino, and right now I'm currently campaigning with the help of friends and family for a
release date. I believe one must have a good sense of humor to stay young at heart and in mind. I enjoy reading history, horror and science fiction novels. I also study the Law and help others with their legal needs when possible.

I do hope this information helps somewhat for as you know a pen pal keeps one from talking to one's self.
I leave you with a poem I wrote entitled, 'Sterilit

No sunlit rays of warmth to feel
Or moon light beams on windowsills
No warmth of touch of kindred kind
Just putrid waters to caress the mind
Air so stale you struggle to breathe
In the stagnant pond of sterility

I'm a 30-year-old Mexicano, in search of real friendship. Race and gender are of no importance. I hope you're not looking for perfection, because I'm not perfect. Obviously, I'm in prison for committing a crime. But I'm a man with morals, values, and respect for others and I've lived and learned throughout life's experiences. I'm a 31-year-old black man, who grew up with Mexican people. I learned to speak and understand Spanish through those friendships. I was arrested and convicted at the age of 20, and have been in prison ever since. I grew up in Compton, California where most young people aspired to be gang members and drug dealers. In any case, I chose the Mexican
gangs at the age of 12. I was convicted of car jacking.

Fortunately for me, I got a second chance to succeed in the world. I'm looking forward to paroling in early 2006 but I'm apprehensive about seeing the new world. My mind is no longer the 20 year old mind back 11
years ago, but I don't know what to expect. I'm looking for a friend to help me reinstate myself with the new world. All and any help is appreciated and welcomed. I enjoy writing and playing chess. I love

Hello, if you’re reading this ad then you must be open minded or at least curious about us trapped behind these walls. That’s a step in the right direction. Your next step, I hope, will be you contacting me. Your letter will definitely be appreciated and responded to quickly.
In the six years I’ve been down I have grown and changed for the better. I’ve spent so much time studying and learning. I’m currently finishing my GED and plan to continue my education. I also work to counsel the youth in my community, to try to help them set direction for their lives.
I keep myself busy with positive things, but at the same time I have become incredibly lonely. Correspondence from one warm hearted woman would brighten up my world immensely. I hope to find a girl who likes to write, one I can become friends with, and one day meet face to face. I’m in prison for a felony. It’s not a story I want to share on the web, but will tell you in correspondence, just ask…
My hobbies are working out, reading, writing and listening to music. I love R&B such as Mary J. Blige and Jagged Edge. Just a couple to throw out there.

I'm a 32-year-old mature black man, born under the zodiac sign of Aries, April 2, 1972. I was born in a small part of the Bay area known as Richmond, and raised in an even smaller area known as (NARF) North Richmond. I'm the very very very proud father of a beautiful young Queen, name Ms. Kiyanni Jasmine Brown (that's my diamond), also born April 2, 1999. I stand 5'6”, I weigh in at 185 lbs, I'm physically fit, well groomed, very outgoing, and, most important, I am house broken. As we both know from my return address, my life is restricted by bars of steel, walls of concrete and cold lonely nights. Please do not
misunderstand my situation, I'm not here for some sick, twisted, deranged, psychopathic reason. My situation derives from my infatuation with fast money and the lifestyle it allowed me and my family to live. I was caught with large amounts of heroin, coke and pot (I'm not a user of hard drugs, but I love pot). I've been locked up since Oct 3rd, 1999. At any rate, I wasn't totally illegal, I found time to attend community college, known as ContraCost College, studying Business Management, Business Administration and Accounting. That's why I say don't allow my situation to cloud your judgement about Travell. There's a lot more to him, trust me. I love to write letters, poetry and music. Well, I've opened a tiny, tiny bit about myself, so I'd enjoy if you'd allow Travell a peek at your likes and dislikes. What's your enjoyments? What you do in your spare time? This ad is my earnest attempt to reach out beyond these walls in search of friendship. My friends have pretty much blown in the end, so my outside contact is practically none. I have a paralegal certificate, and am always interested in furthering my education. Don’t go searching past this ad!!! I’m the one that needs your correspondence the most!!! You never know how good something can be until you take a chance. If you take a chance with me you won’t be disappointed.

I'm a fit and healthy 43-year-old man with brown hair and green eyes and I'm of Mexican/ European heritage.

I encourage you to not pass up this opportunity to meet and acquaint yourself with a man who has a fun, respectful, good-natured character. One who will appreciate your time in sharing with me the finer qualities of genuine companionship.

Hearing from you will definitely help in breaking up an otherwise monotonous routine, although I do like to read, study, exercise, and enjoy the short walks I'm allowed on the yard (smile).

Allow me this chance to dispel any negative, stereotypical perception about a man serving time. At least in my own case (and I'm not alone in this) I promise to show you there are far more positive things than people generally believe. I welcome those from all walks of life, for open and stimulating discussion (smile).

I am a 35 year old Hispanic man from the Los Angeles County area. I have been incarcerated since the middle of 1994. Straight 15 plus years since the last taste of freedom for me.
I have had many ups and downs and unknown emotions within these years of incarceration. I had entered this world still a young kid…. Now years of suffering in this lonely world has turned me into a young adult. At times I feel like I was frozen in time… and I am barely melting from these cold walls. My release date approaches my way real fast. Hopefully next May I will be out of here and shipped out over the boarder, since I have a deportation order, warrant.
I am a legal resident , but I committed an alleged crime which I was convicted of. So my understanding is that I will get deported because of the fact I was found guilty by the jury of my peers.
While incarcerated I have achieved many goals in my life. I have a totally different perspective of life in it’s wide picture, and that completes me when I get out. I’ll be looking forward to finding the right path to true happiness.
Right now I am avoiding all the nonsense of daily prison life, but I am hoping for a better tomorrow. God willing, everything will be good.
I have a lot more to say and a lengthy list of these very important things I need help with if someone is interested in writing to me. I would like to share some ideas and many other types of conversations.
I love talking about things that are very interesting in life.
This is all for right now though… I will patiently wait for some kind of response to this letter.

May God Almighty bless your day, today and always.

I am a 31-year-old Chicano from Salinas, C.A. I'm housed here in Pelican Bay's SHU and spend most of my time exercising, reading (a lot), studying and keeping a positive state of mind. I've been incarcerated since 2001, been here in the SHU since 2002, and I'll be getting out at the end of this year. I'm looking to start a friendship that can continue it when I get out. When I was out, I worked for a beverage
distributor (Sales Rep), went to City College and lived a real good life. Got caught up in some negative scene and ended up in here. But due to having a good attorney, got a short sentence - will be out soon

Hello and very nice to meet you. I hope when you read this that it will find you, and all of your loved ones, in the best of health and always in happy spirits.

I'm Mexican-American and was born on February 5, 1966 in Los Angeles, Cal. That's where I spent the happiest 18 years of my life. I have black hair and brown eyes and sport a mustache. I do shave it off just to see if I still look young (smile). Do I? Still look young? Well some say I look younger with my mustache. Ha. Ha.

I've been incarcerated for almost 21 years, but I still keep hope alive that one day they'll let me go home. What did I do? Well, I was convicted of a crime Ididn't do. It's a long and sad story, which I wouldn't mind sharing with anyone.

I love to play sports and watch them on television. I've been playing sports since I was 6 years young. I also play chess almost everyday - how else am I going to get better, right” I wouldn't mind teaching and
becoming a counselor when they let me go home. I love to read, my favorite subject has to be history, but I also like philosophy, science, politics and I just got into child development. My cousin Monica went to
college and that's what she took, and so I thought to myself, I was once a kid myself, and why do we act the way we do? I would really like to help our kids who are having a very hard time with everyday life.

Well feel free to ask me whatever you like, I really have nothing to hide. I'm willing to share my life experiences, the little wisdom I possess, and most importantly my friendship. Anyway, I'm really looking
forward in making a new friendship. Just be yourself (smile).

I would like to meet a woman who will not judge me by my past mistakes, but who will take a chance and the time to get to know me for who I really am. I am a poet and an artist, but according to some, I'm just a #J05269. I'm 29, born on 2/5/75. I'm doing an 8 year bid for the sale and transportation of drugs. I'm open minded and at the same time, a very opinionated, strong-minded man. I'm interested in being interested. If a person can keep me going then I know it will be an awesome relationship. Not exactly looking for love, but support, companionship and respect that will come from meeting someone new. The latter is the most important to me. Meeting new people, learning new ways, understanding new perspectives is what I want to do. In some way, gaining knowledge and wisdom are things that a new friendship will shed light on. I am in a place with no feeling, no emotion. I want to share mine with you and hopefully get the chance for you to share yours with me. My goals are simple. I want to educate myself and become a better person. In some way I've yet to figure out, I'd like to help others smile. Somehow, I just want to make a positive difference in someone's life. Since you've read this far, I'm hoping it's you. Besides being interested in being interested, my interests include art, literature, poetry, plays and great books by great men who tell a story so well that it's like a lover's warm embrace or a story that will take you there and make you not want to come back. I love paintings and music, from classical to today's music, but my favorite is oldies. I also draw and write. There is so much more to say, but if I told everything now, what would we have to talk about when you do write? I'm out-going and very active, always with a positive outlook on life, so please, no sour pusses.

I'm 36 years old, from Los Angeles, though presently incarcerated at one of California's finest resorts: Pelican Bay State Prison, SHU, where I've been confined for the past 15 years. I'm seeking a Pen Pal with hopes of building a strong friendship.

To give a brief description of myself, I'm clean cut with black hair, brown eyes, and a mustache. I work out religiously, so I'm in tip-top shape. I'm an artist and I like to draw in my spare time, but that's just one of my many talents. I'm currently a college student (via
correspondence courses) working toward an Associates degree. My goal is to acquire a Bachelor's degree in business. I tend to spend my time wisely in my efforts to make the best of the situation in a positive way in order to prepare myself for the future and my eventual release to the competetive world of a free society. I have never been one to let life pass me by despite my many years in solitary confinement (SHU), always engaging in ways that will help me become a better man. But it's patient people on the outside who help us grow We come from a small world and live in an even smaller one We need to see a bigger picture.

If you're interested in sharing life experiences and perhaps providing me with a window to the outside, don't hesitate to write.

I'm a 46-year-old man, 5'10” tall, 175 lbs. I've been down 22 years now. And in those years I've learned that I don't always understand everything in life. And that life can be a never-ending learning experience. And that the only limits in life are the ones we place on ourselves or let others place upon us.

I'm looking for a sincere, lasting friendship. Honesty (no games!) and a sense of humor are musts. So be yourself!

Unfortunately, I find myself writing this while incarcerated, in hopes of starting a pen- pal relationship and friendship. I'm a 33 year old Mexican-American from San Gabriel Valley. I'm 5'10”, 170 lbs, short black hair, brown eyes and dark chocolate skin, aka ‘sweet tootsie roll.' I've been away going on 9 years, but glad to say I'll be getting
out in Nov of 2005. It's only a skip, hop and a jump away. I was born in Los Angeles and I basically was on my own since the age of 12. I quit school and to avoid foster homes I had to do what I had to do - turn into criminal activities to survive financially. I was in and out of Juvenile Hall. Icame to state prison at the age of 20, I got out when I was 25. It was tough to stay out, I really do believe I was still with a
destructive state of mind. Not knowing what I wanted in life, I was just a body who was there. To make a long story short, I came back 4 months later to do a violation of 30 days. Unfortunately, something happened in prison and I ended up with 9 years for assault with a weapon. Most of
that time was spent in the hole (S.H.U.). I'm in the cell 23 hours a day with no telephone calls or any contact with loved ones. It's a tough situation to be in, but as a man, one must accept the consequences of one's own actions. I can now say that I have a whole different way of thinking and of looking at life. I'm ready to get out. Know it ain't gonna be easy, I have no idea what awaits for me, I've been expecting the worst and hoping for the best. So if you are someone who wants to know more of me and get to know the person that I am please don't hold back. Feel free. I am a good person with lots of smiles to offer.

Hello. If you’re reading this ad then you must be open minded or at least curious. The purpose of this ad is to make new and exciting friends
In the time that I have been down I have grown and changed for the better. I try keeping myself busy with positive things. I am currently finishing my G.E.D and plan to continue my education. But at the same time I have become lonely I’d love to hear from a girl that likes to write. Correspondence from a warm, kind hearted woman. Someone who is understanding and patient would really brighten up my world immensely. I am currently in prison for a felony, which I do not wish to share the details of on the web, but I will tell you in correspondence. Just ask. Honesty and sincerity is important to me.
My favorite hobbies include, writing letters, swimming in the ocean, bike riding, playing sports, looking at photographs, playing chess. I love kids, animals, artwork and painted nails. Nice perfume is always a plus. I like listening to music, and reading books. I’m versatile when it comes to books.
My ultimate goal is to get out of this place and become successful in life and avoid the many pitfalls of society. Anyway, there is plenty more of myself…how about you?
I’m looking for a friend, someone to share my innermost thoughts with. No subject or thoughts are taboo. Open minds are a blessing. Life is only once. Enjoy what brings you pleasure. I have much more to say but my words are limited here. If you are interested I am only a stamp away.

I would like to start by thanking each and every one of you who reads this ad, whether you chose to respond or not, I truly appreciate your time and patience.
My name is Nythell Collins. I’m a 31 year old black man at Pelican Bay. My hobbies are exercising, reading and writing. I also attend church to learn more about God as well as developing a relationship with him. So I’m hoping to capture the attention of a honest, intelligent, caring female, who is open to correspond with someone incarcerated.
Prison can be a dire place, but when given the chance to exercise the mind through outside correspondence can be a blessing and a way to escape the madness of prison life. True friendships are hard to find, this I know, but maybe what I have to offer could possibly be what’s missing in your life? Like someone with a positive open mind, willing to listen and eager to understand the ups and downs you go through on life’s roller coaster. And those are the very thing I’m missing in my life. But most importantly someone who understands, or can try to understand what life is like for someone in my situation. So if you are interested in starting a new friendship then pick up the pen and lets begin to be a benefit to each other.

Wadear Cousimano

My request for correspondence is not a cry of a drowning man reaching for a little assistance. (Even though love and compassion is missing from places like this). However strange or sensitive that may seem, it is the truth. This is why I cherish letters. This is why I cherish time granted from others. This is why I'm seeking a Pen Pal. Something personal, someone I can trust, someone to share experiences/stories with. Someone I can open up to with honest feelings and trust with those secrets. I'm still a human being, and like everyone else, I still want to feel connected and loved. I can still be warm, loving, and giving. I still laugh, hurt and dream. I still like to talk, learn, and grow.

Yeah. I can still be intelligent, literate, friendly and charming. I have no kids -darn!. I prioritize family. I still enjoy music, writing, reading, sports, exercising and grasping life's knowledge. I'm in the
process of learning the Spanish language. I'm a young 32 (9.2.72) and a kid at heart. I mean just because you might see signs of snow on the roof, by all means it doesn't mean there's no fire in the chimney. Yes, I have a sense of humor. And I always make the best of every situation. Just to wake up in the morning knowing I've met another sunrise is a true beauty/gift in itself. And having the presence of mind to look
forward to another, is all that one can ask for. All I would like is someone who can understand and appreciate that.

In short, I'm just looking for a little kindness, a friend. Someone to help ease the pain if you will and fill that void deep within. To those without, little things mean a lot. Things most people take for granted are exactly the same things that are cherished by the ones who don't have the luxury of being able to take for granted. For a lot of people, a letter is a waste of time. But when it's your only way to stay connected to the world at large, and people in general, a letter received is equivalent to a life jacket in an ocean. As people start to feel the loneliness that comes from separation and loss of contact causes, they often drown in misery. But when we have ties to a realm where time is actually devoted to them, they can float with their heads above water. Even though the times have gotten more hectic, there are still 24 hours in a day. It doesn't seem like a person's worth could be measured in time, but when you tell someone you don'' have time for them, it's saying a lot. Just as taking time to write a letter says a lot.

Don't get me wrong, I don't pretend to be an angel. However, I've used what I've gone through, what I've suffered and the suffering I've caused others as stepping stones to better myself. I've taken responsibility for who I am and what I've done. It's not sympathy I'm after, its encouragement. So I reach out for honest, courageous and kind individuals who have a sense of humor and a sense of wonder for intelligent encouraging letters to engage in insightful and thought
provoking conversation. Sharing wisdom and perspectives.

I hope this will provide you with a different view of what your letters might mean to a person like me. Because for many, kind words and understanding may be that life jacket that keeps a man from drowning.
Don't let me go under. Decide if you have time to write someone a letter and you'll know the value to you of that person, 24 hours in a day, who's worth the time a letter takes.

James Crawford

08/24/09

My name is James Crawford, most of my friends and family call me Bow Low, pronounced “Bolo”. I am 6”3, 220 lbs in the best shape of my life. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA.
I came to prison at the ripe age of 19. I was illiterate and very much active in neighborhood activities which led me to prison where I was given 7 consecutive life sentences for second degree murder. Looking back on it, I am serving life in prison for not telling on the actual murderer. I ran with these individuals most of my life and many of us understood that we could be murdered or imprisoned at any time, especially since everyone around us was being murdered or going to prison. We lived on the streets day in and day out, as we see today with many more young people whose story is so similar to mine. Therefore, when you live on the streets, you eat off the street life, and this life entails everything that can happen under the sun whether it’s good or bad. Everyone I was with came from a dysfunctional family which only encouraged that one embraces this lifestyle. It’s no different than the homeless or living check to check in run down homes. So the horrible conditions influence actions, sometimes good and sometimes bad. So when you do mess up your life at a very young age, the system is very unforgiving and punish you to the full extent of the law. There are no second chances regardless of the rehabilitation one goes under. The only way you can overcome the trials and tribulations that plague one’s life is by receiving an education that encourages one to become more and more in touch with his/her humanity. I have made this journey successfully by dedicating myself to sound studies and world events. I have participated in many progressive programs in order to offer new solutions to America’s problems. Therefore, as a progressive African I seek strong dialogue that will contribute to the advancement of humanity. I need not to seek a love interest because it makes no sense to work for my love when I offer it freely. My love for humanity keeps me deeply in love. Therefore, lets open up a dialogue where we are progressive in the following categories: politics, economics, culture and social circumstances that influence most of our lives on a daily basis.
I do not care what gender because as I said, I am a progressive African serving life in solitary confinement for my political views which have been deemed as a threat to the security of the penal interest which is only an excuse to suppress one’s political views.

Well, I hope you all remain in the spirit of growth, I shall.

One love, one struggle,

David Cruz

I'm a Hispanic man doing a 29-years-to-life sentence. I've been in Pelican Bay's SHU – solitary confinement - for 11 of those years. I recently started studying algebra and Chinese writing, so a friend who has those interests would be nice. More important than anything, though, is someone to communicate with on the outside. Can you imagine what 11 years in solitary is like?

Richard Cruz

Dear reader,

My utmost respect to you, also I extend my arms out in a warm embrace with the hope that a friendship will emerge of this honest and sincere introduction.

My name is Richard Cruz, I am a 23 year old Mexican, born in the city of Orange California, however I was raised in the city of Anaheim (Southern California).
My physical description would be as such: height 5”10, weight 185lbs, light skinned with light brown eyes and hair.
To occupy my time and to better myself, I read a broad variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction, but I enjoy reading mostly about world history. I write poetry and enjoy reading it too. I work out on average 5 times a week. I am also currently studying to obtain my G.E.D.
I am always respectful and do my best to learn from each life experience. I treat others as I would want to be treated. I maintain a high level of self respect, am open minded and take constructive criticism as a tool of advantage. My thing is always to try to understand what life is teaching and move forward daily. One thing that I’ve just gotten the hang of is to accept the past and leave it in the past.

I grew up in a household with 15 siblings, I am the 16th child. A big family is both good and bad. Good because there’s no lack of friends, bad because there is a lack of parental attention that a child tends to want. As a result I grew up feeling angry and insignificant (not the case as I now understand as an adult). As a result of these feelings I rebelled against my parents, I joined a gang at the age of 9, and began using drugs at the age of 10. My environment was not the best and I became easily lost in the lifestyle. Juvenile Hall became my second home. Then I was in the California youth authority, finally I graduated to prison. Never did I imagine my life would end up with me in a small cell, with all my movement decided for me. I accept this because I failed to make a difference in the outside world. Whether or not I deserve it or not, I chose to live the lifestyle I lived, so I must accept this result. Now I just learn and realize that there are alternative ways to live, that the way I grew up doesn’t have to dictate my whole future. I find hope in knowing that in a place like this, a human soul can make sense of his life and find a hope to change and make a personal choice to live differently. I now realize this human power and am using it. To someday be free again and to live life in a whole new way with different meaning. Every day is a struggle but to quit is to take no value in myself, so I choose to struggle. Education and understanding are my knife and shield.

Reader, please feel free to write, and expect my honesty. I only want friendship based on something real that is both teaching and understanding. My goal is to surround myself with positive, influential people, with a hope to make a healthy friendship come about.

Sincerely,
Richard Cruz.

Jesse de la Cruz

Hey! My name is Jesse. I’d like to thank you for taking some time to screen my ad. So let me tell you a little bit about myself.
I’m pretty smart, patient and honest. I like to laugh and crack jokes. I’m generally out going, energetic and sociable. I’m a goal-oriented person and look forward to each day. I have a good personality and like to help people out. There’s definitely a lot more to me that only can be through time and communication. I’ve had my share of let downs and pain as well, but blessed with enough faith to hold my head up. A few things I’m into: I like to write poetry, listen to music (R&B, Rap). I’m very creative. I love to write and express myself, but believe it’s equally important to be heard and understood. So you know I’m open minded and thoughtful.
I’m looking to meet someone who is honest, caring, intelligent, funny, and a li’l sweet. Basically someone with character for friendship and possibly more. Race isn’t an issue with me. Even though I’m in prison with some tattoos, please don’t be quick to judge me by my appearance, judge me by what’s in my heart and mind. That’s most important to me.
Thank you for your time. Hope to hear from you. Take care.

Greetings! I'm a 24-year-old Mexican with blue-grey eyes from San Bernardino. I am now winding down an 8-year term and spending it in SHU.

I'm an open-minded guy who appreciates simple as well as intellectual conversation. I enjoy reading, writing, poetry, and drawing. My music likes are very diverse. If any one should be interested enough to
respond, I'm sure they'll find we have a lot to share and enjoy. I'm just a guy who has made some bad choices and decisions, but that's not the whole story.
